Brendan founded the Homeward Initiative with a $150,000 grant he won from the University of Pennsylvania shortly before he graduated in 2019. He created the Homeward Initiative to address the dire lack of LGBTQ-affirming resources for homeless youth in Philadelphia, who compose approximately 40% of the youth homeless population. The model, called host homes, diverts young people from shelters and the street, both of which are extremely dangerous, by placing them in the homes of vetted and caring adult volunteers while they wait for longer term housing - like Airbnb, but for a good cause. Brendan is passionate about co-living because he believes that community and belonging are to the soul what food and water are to the body - essential to our survival. He plans on dedicating his life to empowering people to find a place they belong.
