This is called a hybrid microphone because you can plug it in via XLR to a mixer, or USB into a computer. You can even use both at the same time!

When in XLR mode, it works just like any other microphone. The mixer will control all levels.

When in USB mode, you have control of not only the microphone volume, but also the headphone connection on the back of the unit. This allows you to raise and lower gain, or mute the microphone outright.
