While we know that Michael loved playing hockey, especially with his three sons Kyle, Ryan, and Tyler, it's nearly impossible to make sense of why or how something like this could happen.   Michael was a beloved husband and father and, for those of us who played with him, a hell of a teammate. While most of us know him because of hockey, his influence stretches beyond just that community. He was always outspoken and fiercely competitive and most of us will choose to remember him as a fighter, a leader, and a friend.  All of our thoughts and prayers are with his family now. There is little that can be done to ease the pain of those whom he loved and that loved him. As a community of acquaintances, associates, teammates, friends and family we'd like you to consider helping however you can. His last start was against the Carolina Hurricanes on March 13; he was removed 8:02 into the second period after allowing four goals on 13 shots.  Halak was placed on waivers by the Islanders on Dec. 30; he cleared the following day and was sent to Bridgeport, where he was 17-7-3 with a 2.15 goals-against average and .925 save percentage in 27 games.  Halak's last NHL game was a 6-4 loss at the Minnesota Wild on Dec. 29. He was pulled in the second period after allowing four goals on 24 shots, including three in a span of 1:20.  The 31-year-old is 6-8-5 with a 3.23 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage in 21 games for the Islanders this season. He is 206-123-42 with a 2.42 GAA and a .916 save percentage in 388 NHL games with the Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues, Washington Capitals and the Islanders.  New York acquired Halak from Washington in a trade May 1, 2014. Three weeks later, the Islanders signed him to a four-year, $18 million contract that runs through the 2017-18 season.  The Blueshirts added to their goaltending depth on Thursday,signing Bowling Green junior Chris Nell to an entry-level contract.  Nell, 22, just wrapped his junior campaign at Bowling Green, going 17-14-2 with a 2.15 GAA and .916 save percentage. This year, he became the school’s all-time leader in career shutouts, this after a terrific sophomore campaign in which he finished with a sparking 1.31 GAA and .930 save percentage.  An undrafted free agent, Nell now joins an organization with several young netminders in the mix. Mackenzie Skapski, a 2013 draftee, made his NHL debut two years ago but has struggled this season, splitting time between AHL Hartford and ECHL Greenville. Brandon Halverson, a second-rounder in ’14, has also split time between Hartford and Greenville, and was recently recalled to New York on an emergency basis.  New York has also drafted Russian netminder Igor Shesterkin (fourth round, ’14), Slovak Adam Huska (seventh round, ’15) and UMass-Lowell product Tyler Wall (sixth round, ’16).    Injuries Vancouver Canucks centerMarkus Granlund will have wrist surgery, after which a timetable for his return will be provided.  "Markus has had an ongoing wrist injury which we've treated through regular maintenance and rehabilitation," Canucks general manager Jim Benning said Monday. "Our Canucks medical team and Markus believe that surgery is the best course of action for his long-term health and by having the procedure now it will allow him to have more time to rehabilitate and work out in preparation for next season. Markus is an important part of our team and we are confident he'll have a full recovery."  Granlund, 23, was acquired in a trade with the Calgary Flames for forward Hunter Shinkaruk on Feb. 22, 2016. In 69 games, he has 19 goals, 13 assists and 32 points, all NHL career highs, and ranks second on the Canucks in goals behind Bo Horvat (20). Winnipeg Jets centerShawn Matthias will have shoulder surgery and miss the remainder of the season.  "He had a pre-existing labral tear that he's been trying to deal with and it just got to the point where he can't," coach Paul Maurice said. "It's a full-on rehab, we're talking about months."  Matthias, 29, had 12 points (eight goals, four assists) in 45 games this season. He last played in a 5-4 overtime loss at the Nashville Predators on Monday. The Jets entered Saturday 10 points behind the St. Louis Blues for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference.  Matthias, a second-round pick by the Detroit Red Wings (No. 47) in the 2006 NHL Draft, has 97 points (48 goals, 49 assists) in 312 NHL games through 10 seasons with the Florida Panthers, Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Avalanche and Jets.  Pittsburgh Penguins centerEvgeni Malkin will not play against the New Jersey Devils on Friday (7 p.m. ET; SN360, ROOT, MSG+, NHL.TV) because of an upper-body injury.  Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said the issue is something that has been bothering Malkin for a while. Sullivan said he expects to have more information on Malkin's status Saturday.  Malkin is fifth in the NHL with 72 points and tied for fourth with 33 goals. He missed seven games from Jan. 26-Feb. 11 with a lower-body injury.  Louis Blues forwardPaul Stastny is week to week with a lower-body injury.  Stastny did not play the final two periods of a 4-2 win against the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday. Coach Mike Yeo said Stastny was not injured when hit by a shot taken by teammate Vladimir Tarasenko but that the center tweaked something.  Stastny missed four games with a lower-body injury sustained Feb. 10. He has 40 points (18 goals, 22 assists) in 66 games.  According to Newsday’s Arthur Staple, the Islanders’ third-line center suffered a broken wrist in the second period of his team’s 3-2 in over theNew York Rangers. Per Staple, Strome will miss the rest of the regular season and the team would have to go deep in the playoffs for him to return.  The 23-year-old Strome has 13 goals and 30 points while averaging 14:36 of ice-time per-game.  Toronto Maple Leafsforward Eric Fehr may be done for the rest of the regular season after injuring his hand on Wednesday against the Columbus Blue Jackets.  Fehr was acquired by the Maple Leafs from the Pittsburgh Penguins at the trade deadline. Wednesday was his first game with Toronto.  The 31-year-old has six goals and 11 points in 53 games this season. Milestones/Records/Honors/Deaths: Boston Bruins left wing Brad Marchand, Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby and Calgary Flames goaltender Brian Elliott have been named the NHL's "Three Stars" for the week ending March 19. Marchand led the NHL with 5-4-9 in three games - all multi-point performances - to power the Bruins (38-27-6, 82 points) to a pair of victories.  Crosby paced the League with six goals and ranked second with eight points in four starts to guide the Penguins (45-17-9, 99 points) to a 2-1-1 week.  Elliott went 3-0-0 with a 1.95 goals-against average and .926 save percentage to help the Flames (41-27-4, 86 points) maintain third place in the Pacific Division.  Eric Staal played in his 1000th game on Sunday Jaromir Jagr had two assists Friday to pass Gordie Howe with his 269th NHL point after turning 40, most in history.  "I'm going to pass him for the most points after 50," Jagr said. "That's what I'm looking for."  Jagr, who turned 45 on Feb. 15, assisted on goals by Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov in a 4-3 win against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.  Jagr has 1,907 NHL points, second behind Wayne Gretzky (2,857). Howe played until he was 42 then had 41 points in one season as a 51-year-old to finish with 1,850, fourth behind Mark Messier (1,887).  "It's a big honor, no question about it," Jagr said. "It's no accident they call him Mr. Hockey, so it's a big honor to me."  Jagr would become the fourth player in NHL history to play 1,700 games Sunday in Pittsburgh, where he began his NHL career at age 18 in 1990-91.  Suspensions/Fines:  Buffalo Sabres defensemanRasmus Ristolainen will have a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Thursday for interference against Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jake Guentzel.  The incident occurred at 8:46 of the first period of the game at KeyBank Center. Ristolainen received a five-minute major for interference and a 10-minute misconduct. Guentzel did not return to the game.  The Penguins defeated the Sabres 3-1.  The following grounds are being considered for supplemental discipline: interference. However, the Department of Player Safety retains the right to make adjustments to the infraction upon review.  Calgary Flames forwardMatthew Tkachuk has been suspended for two games, without pay, for elbowing Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty during NHL Game No. 1069 in Calgary on Sunday, March 19, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced Monday.  The incident occurred at 19:35 of the first period.  Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, Tkachuk will forfeit $10,277.78.  Toronto Maple Leafs defensemanRoman Polak has been suspended for two games, without pay, for boarding Columbus Blue Jackets forward Oliver Bjorkstrand during NHL Game No. 1086 in Columbus on Wednesday, March 22, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today.  The incident occurred at 1:00 of the third period. "Money's not a problem," McPhee said Monday in a Q&A; with season-ticket holders. "Our owner, Bill Foley, is not afraid to spend to get the right player, and it's our job to identify who those players are."  Some players who can become unrestricted free agents are San Jose Sharks center Joe Thornton, Washington Capitals forward J. Oshie, and Capitals defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk.  From June 18-20, Vegas will have a chance to sign any restricted or unrestricted free agent left unprotected by his team for the NHL Expansion Draft, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said. These free agents would not otherwise be allowed to sign with a team different than the one they played for this season until July 1.  That 72-hour free-agent window coincides with the Expansion Draft process. If a free agent does sign with the Golden Knights, he would be Vegas' one selection from that player's team (Vegas is required to select or sign one player off each existing team's list of unprotected players, with a minimum of 14 forwards, nine defensemen and three goalies).  This does not preclude Vegas from claiming an unprotected free agent during the Expansion Draft and gaining an exclusive window to sign the player before July 1, but the NHL is giving the Golden Knights the window to reduce the chance they will claim a player who has no intention of signing with them.  https://www.nhl.com/news/golden-knights-gm-says-team-plans-to-spend-in-free-agency/c-287943336 The Vegas Golden Knights plan to unveil their jerseys prior to the NHL Expansion Draft in June, general manager George McPhee told the Las Vegas Review-Journal on Tuesday.  They are expected to be available for purchase in September.  The Golden Knights unveiled their logo and colors (steel grey, gold, red and black) on Nov. 22.
