Financial terms were not disclosed, but TSN reported the average annual value is $3.8 million. Rakell had abdominal surgery last month to remove scar tissue related to an appendectomy he had in April. The procedure forced his removal from Team Sweden at the World Cup of Hockey 2016. https://www.nhl.com/news/ducks-sign-rickard-rakell-to-six-year-contract/c-282664348 All Transactions: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/transactions Injuries Los Angeles Kings goalieJonathan Quick had a non-surgical procedure for a lower-body injury Tuesday and is out indefinitely, the Kings said Wednesday. General manager Dean Lombardi on Wednesday told the Los Angeles Times that Quick will be out for about three months. Quick opted against surgery for what is believed to be a groin injury sustained in the final 30 seconds of the first period of the Kings' season-opening game against the San Jose Sharks on Oct. 12. Lombardi said last week that Quick's injury is in the same area as the strained groin that kept him out for almost two months in 2013 and confirmed it was not a knee injury. Peter Budaj was recalled from Ontario of the AHL to take Quick’s place on the roster. https://www.nhl.com/news/los-angeles-goaltender-jonathan-quick-out-indefinitely/c-282838396 http://www.hockey-reference.com/players/q/quickjo01.html DefensemanKris Letang and forward Conor Sheary have joined the injury list for the Pittsburgh Penguins, who are without several key players less than a week into their Stanley Cup defense.  Captain Sidney Crosby (concussion), Letang (upper body) and Sheary (eye) each are day to day, coach Mike Sullivan said Wednesday. Goalie Matt Murray (broken hand) participated in an optional practice at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex on Wednesday and has been cleared to return to full practice, Sullivan said. Letang and Sheary were injured during a 4-0 loss at the Montreal Canadiens on 10/18.  https://www.nhl.com/news/sidney-crosby-kris-letang-conor-sheary-each-day-to-day-for-pittsburgh/c-282839360 Montreal Canadiens goaltenderCarey Price is still out with the flu!  Hehopes to make his season debut at home against the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday 10/20 (7:30 p.m. ET; SN360, RDS, FS-A, NHL.TV), but he was not ready to make that decision Wednesday. The illness caused him to lose 7-8 pounds, draining him of some energy. Price said he wants to make sure his energy level is sufficient when he wakes up Thursday before making the decision whether to play.  https://www.nhl.com/news/carey-price-hopes-to-make-season-debut-against-coyotes/c-282832732 After missing the Boston Bruins' season-opening three-game road trip because of a lower-body injury, centerPatrice Bergeron practiced Wednesday and could be available for the home opener against the New Jersey Devils at TD Garden on Thursday 10/20 (7 p.m. ET; NESN, MSG+, NHL.TV). Bergeron was injured in practice Oct. 12. The Bruins hoped he would join them at some point during the road trip, but they went 2-1-0 without him. He started skating on his own Monday.  Bergeron said he felt fine after practice and didn't appear limited on the ice. Bergeron, who missed a total of 14 games in the past six seasons, said he was impressed with the winning road trip but couldn't wait to be reunited with his teammates. https://www.nhl.com/news/patrice-bergeron-returns-to-practice-for-boston/c-282837270 Winnipeg Jets forwardBryan Little will be out indefinitely after sustaining a lower-body injury in a' 5-4 overtime win against the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday 10/13. Little collided with Hurricanes forward Bryan Bickell early in the first period and did not return.  Little played 2:48 before exiting the game. He assisted on Shawn Matthias' goal that gave the Jets a 1-0 lead at 4:14 of the first period. https://www.nhl.com/news/winnipeg-forward-bryan-little-out-indefinitely/c-282664898 http://www.hockey-reference.com/players/l/littlbr01.html Buffalo Sabres forwardEvander Kane left their season-opening 4-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens in the second period with an injury Thursday 10/13. Kane was helped off the ice with 12 seconds remaining in the period after he fell into the end boards while pursuing the puck with Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin. Kane went into the boards on his back, left side first. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation and precautionary measures, the Sabres said. https://www.nhl.com/news/buffalo-sabres-evander-kane-exits-with-injury/c-282637542 After watching the first three games, in a suit, in the pressbox, Mark Fayne was back on the Edmonton Oilers’ blue-line Tuesday 10/18 against Carolina Hurricanes. But only for 2½ minutes of ice-time, seven shifts, before he got hurt. The Oilers weren’t saying what the injury was but it came after he helped set up Jordan Eberle’s goal 9½ minutes into the game, but he could be out for long-term. Fayne was placed on IR on Wednesday, 10/19.  Ben Betker was recalled from Bakersfield (AHL) to replace him. Buffalo GM Tim Murray contract extended.     Suspensions None   Milestones/Records: Chicago Blackhawks forwardMarian Hossa became the 44th NHL player to reach the 500-goal plateau when he scored a second-period power-play goal against the Philadelphia Flyers on 10/18. Hossa is the fourth active player to reach the milestone, behind Jaromir Jagr (749), Jarome Iginla (612) and Alex Ovechkin(526).  Hossa also is within reach of two other career milestones. He is seven assists shy of 600 and seven points from 1,100.  https://www.nhl.com/news/game-recap-chicago-blackhawks-philadelphia-flyers/c-282811812 Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews scored thefirst four goals of his NHL career, including a hat trick by the 1:25 mark of the second period, to become the first player in the modern era of the NHL (since 1943-44) to score four times in his League debut.  Three other players have recorded a hat trick in their League debut in the modern era, according to the Elias Sports Bureau: Quebec Nordiques forward Real Cloutier (Oct. 10, 1979 vs. ATL: 3 G), Dallas Stars forward Fabian Brunnstrom (Oct. 15, 2008 vs. NSH: 3 G) and New York Rangers forward Derek Stepan(Oct. 9, 2010 at BUF: 3 G).  three players who accomplished the 4-goal feat on the first day of NHL games, Dec. 19, 1917, but who all had played previously in the National Hockey Association, the direct predecessor to the NHL: Canadiens forward Joe Malone (5 G), Montreal Wanderers forward Harry Hyland (5 G) and Toronto Arenas forward Reg Noble (4 G).  At 19 years, 26 days, Elias says that Matthews also became the third-youngest player in NHL history to scored four goals in a game, behind Toronto's Jack Hamilton on Dec. 4, 1943 (18 years, 185 days) and Washington's Bobby Carpenter on Feb. 25, 1982 (18 years, 227 days).  https://www.nhl.com/news/auston-matthews-scores-4-goals-vs-senators/c-282613348 https://www.nhl.com/news/twitter-reacts-to-auston-matthews-four-goal-night/c-282601984     Other Interesting Stories: Canucks call on college goalie Matt Hewitt - Matt Hewitt started the day as a student athlete at the University of British Columbia, happy to sleep in on a morning without classes. Before the day ends, Hewitt will be an NHL goaltender, at least for one game. Hewitt dressed as the backup goaltender for the Vancouver Canucks against the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday 10/18, taking the ice for warm ups as an emergency backup toJacob Markstrom after No. 1 goalie and scheduled starter Ryan Miller felt "tight" in the morning. Unable to get one of their own goalies to Vancouver from Utica of the American Hockey League in time, the Canucks will turn to Hewitt. Hewitt first got wind of the possibility after waking up late to a phone full of messages about Miller's injury and talk the Canucks might need an emergency backup from UBC, something they've done in past seasons. A few hours later, he got a call from his coach, former Canucks defenseman Sven Butenschon, telling him the NHL job was his for the night. "He said 'you are going up kid' and my heart pretty much stopped right there," Hewitt said. "To have the opportunity to dress for the Canucks, words can't describe how excited I am." Hewitt admits he can't help but think about the possibility of playing.  "I never wish for anybody to get hurt but obviously that led to this opportunity to go up with the Canucks tonight so I'll do my best to be ready if anything happens," he said. No matter what happens, though, Hewitt knows his NHL moment ends with the game. "This is a dream come true for tonight but come tomorrow I am a student again," Hewitt said. https://www.nhl.com/news/matt-hewitt-to-serve-as-canucks-backup-goalie/c-282798384 The Toronto Maple Leafs pulled 19 banners into the rafters of Air Canada Centre on Saturday 10/15 and, in so doing, they took another strong step toward bridging their storied past to a promising present and future. In a dramatic ceremony to begin their Centennial Anniversary, the Maple Leafs announced they were retiring 11 numbers -- 10 of which previously were designated honored numbers -- in an ultimate tribute to the 17 men who wore them. 1:Goalies Turk Broda (1967) and Johnny Bower (1976) 4:Defenseman Clarence "Hap" Day (1961) and forward Leonard "Red" Kelly (1969) 7:Defensemen Frank "King" Clancy (1958) and Tim Horton (1977) 9:Forwards Charlie Conacher (1961) and Ted "Teeder" Kennedy (1966) 10:Forwards Syl Apps (1961) and George Armstrong (1975) 13:Forward Mats Sundin (2012) 14:Forward Dave Keon (1986) 17:Forward Wendel Clark 21:Defenseman Borje Salming (1996) 27:Forwards Frank Mahovlich (1981) and Darryl Sittler (1989) 93:Forward Doug Gilmour (2011). The honored numbers theoretically remained available for use, but only Salming's No. 21 was being worn by a current player, forwardJames van Riemsdyk, who on Saturday switched to No. 25.  https://www.nhl.com/news/maple-leafs-retire-11-numbers-at-ceremony/c-282698500 Mike Green Hat Trick on 10/17 Patrick Laine Hat Trick on 10/19   Highlights of upcoming week Heritage Classic this weekend in Winnipeg. Former NHL forward Wojtek Wolski suffered vertebrae fractures and other injuries in a KHL game Thursday as the result of a scary crash into the boards, his club, Metallurg Magnitogorsk, announced in a release Friday 10/14. According to translation of the team website, Wolski suffered a "fracture of the seventh and fourth cervical vertebrae, injury of the cervical spinal cord, brain concussion, bruises and abrasions on the face." His season is over, the team said.  The injury occurred against Barys Astana during the third period of a 1-1 game. Wolski and another player were going for a loose puck when they collided with each other and into the boards. Wolski was taken off on a stretcher.  https://youtu.be/FuBltcjYewg http://www.hockey-reference.com/players/w/wolskwo01.html Kovi leads KHL in scoring.   Picks of the week:   Wayne Under the category of you have to see it to believe it, Dmitri Orlov flipped Matt Duchene in a manner that the Philippines men’s diving team would be proud of: https://youtu.be/6BHyuuGKtro   divers:  https://youtu.be/GMuLGexatBQ It happened on 10/18, Colorado @ Washington   Steve: Islanders Memoidis Hospital – 10/12 every baby ward got NYI onesies.     Close the show   Web site: http://www.thehockeynuts.com Email the show: [email protected] Voicemail: 919-960-1718 Twitter: Wayne: @waynehallee9 Steve: @sball504man Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thehockeynuts/ Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsHLvaKquh318nZsmtkKF3A
