Financial terms were not disclosed, but TSN reported the average annual value is $3.8 million. Rakell had abdominal surgery last month to remove scar tissue related to an appendectomy he had in April. General manager Dean Lombardi on Wednesday told the Los Angeles Times that Quick will be out for about three months. Quick opted against surgery for what is believed to be a groin injury sustained in the final 30 seconds of the first period of the Kings' season-opening game against the San Jose Sharks on Oct. 12. Lombardi said last week that Quick's injury is in the same area as the strained groin that kept him out for almost two months in 2013 and confirmed it was not a knee injury. The illness caused him to lose 7-8 pounds, draining him of some energy. Bergeron was injured in practice Oct. 12. The Bruins hoped he would join them at some point during the road trip, but they went 2-1-0 without him. He started skating on his own Monday.  Bergeron said he felt fine after practice and didn't appear limited on the ice. Little collided with Hurricanes forward Bryan Bickell early in the first period and did not return.  Little played 2:48 before exiting the game. Kane was helped off the ice with 12 seconds remaining in the period after he fell into the end boards while pursuing the puck with Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin. Kane went into the boards on his back, left side first. But only for 2½ minutes of ice-time, seven shifts, before he got hurt. The Oilers weren’t saying what the injury was but it came after he helped set up Jordan Eberle’s goal 9½ minutes into the game, but he could be out for long-term. Fayne was placed on IR on Wednesday, 10/19.  Ben Betker was recalled from Bakersfield (AHL) to replace him. Buffalo GM Tim Murray contract extended.     Suspensions None   Milestones/Records: Chicago Blackhawks forwardMarian Hossa became the 44th NHL player to reach the 500-goal plateau when he scored a second-period power-play goal against the Philadelphia Flyers on 10/18. Hossa is the fourth active player to reach the milestone, behind Jaromir Jagr (749), Jarome Iginla (612) and Alex Ovechkin(526).  Hossa also is within reach of two other career milestones. Before the day ends, Hewitt will be an NHL goaltender, at least for one game. Hewitt dressed as the backup goaltender for the Vancouver Canucks against the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday 10/18, taking the ice for warm ups as an emergency backup toJacob Markstrom after No. 1 goalie and scheduled starter Ryan Miller felt "tight" in the morning. Unable to get one of their own goalies to Vancouver from Utica of the American Hockey League in time, the Canucks will turn to Hewitt. Hewitt first got wind of the possibility after waking up late to a phone full of messages about Miller's injury and talk the Canucks might need an emergency backup from UBC, something they've done in past seasons. A few hours later, he got a call from his coach, former Canucks defenseman Sven Butenschon, telling him the NHL job was his for the night. "He said 'you are going up kid' and my heart pretty much stopped right there," Hewitt said. "To have the opportunity to dress for the Canucks, words can't describe how excited I am." Hewitt admits he can't help but think about the possibility of playing.  "I never wish for anybody to get hurt but obviously that led to this opportunity to go up with the Canucks tonight so I'll do my best to be ready if anything happens," he said. No matter what happens, though, Hewitt knows his NHL moment ends with the game. Former NHL forward Wojtek Wolski suffered vertebrae fractures and other injuries in a KHL game Thursday as the result of a scary crash into the boards, his club, Metallurg Magnitogorsk, announced in a release Friday 10/14. According to translation of the team website, Wolski suffered a "fracture of the seventh and fourth cervical vertebrae, injury of the cervical spinal cord, brain concussion, bruises and abrasions on the face." His season is over, the team said.  The injury occurred against Barys Astana during the third period of a 1-1 game. Wolski and another player were going for a loose puck when they collided with each other and into the boards.
