Steel, 18, was selected with the No. 30 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft. He leads the Western Hockey League with 54 points (23 goals, 31 assists) in 25 games this season for Regina.  He has 63 goals and 115 assists (178 points) in 158 WHL games the past three seasons.  https://www.nhl.com/news/anaheim-ducks-sign-first-round-pick-sam-steel/c-284902296 All Transactions: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/transactions Injuries ·         The Detroit Red Wings placed goaltender Jimmy Howard on seven-day injured reserve Wednesday. Howard sustained a lower-body injury at 5:39 of the second period of a 4-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena on Tuesday when Red Wings defenseman Nick Jensen and Lightning forward Erik Condra fell on top of him during a scrum in the crease. Howard was unable to put weight on his right leg and had to be helped off the ice. https://www.nhl.com/news/detroits-jimmy-howard-on-ir-with-lower-body-injury/c-284932784 ·         Craig Cunningham, captain of Tucson of the American Hockey League, will likely be discharged from Banner University Medical Center Tucson before Dec. 25.  Cunningham, 26, has been hospitalized since collapsing on the ice before a game against Manitoba on Nov. 19. Medical personnel performed chest compressions before transporting him to Carondelet St. Mary's Hospital, where CPR was continued. Two days later, Arizona Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said Cunningham was in critical but stable condition. Tucson is the Coyotes' AHL affiliate.  Cunningham was soon transferred to Banner, where he received advanced life-saving therapy using ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), a specialized procedure for patients so critically ill that no other support for the heart and lungs is adequate.  "A pump circulates blood through a circuit of tubing supporting heart function and through an oxygenator, which functions as an artificial lung," Banner said in a statement released Tuesday. "It is used to help patients of all ages with life-threatening conditions that impair heart and/or lung function. Most patients who need ECMO are almost certain to die without this level of support."  Though Cunningham's condition continued to worsen, a procedure developed by Dr. Zain Khalpey using a left ventricular assist device, Oxy-LVAD, allowed his heart to recover.  Selected by the Boston Bruins in the fourth round (No. 97) of the 2010 NHL Draft, Cunningham was claimed off waivers by the Coyotes on March 2, 2015. The forward has three goals and eight points in 65 NHL games with the Bruins and Coyotes, and four goals and 13 points in 11 games with Tucson, including the first goal in Roadrunners history on Oct. 14.  https://www.nhl.com/news/craig-cunningham-to-be-released-from-hospital/c-284898706 ·         Ottawa Senators goalie Andrew Hammond left with 3:15 remaining in the first period against the New York Islanders at Barclays Center on Sunday because of what appeared to be a lower-body injury.  Hammond contorted his body after a shot by Islanders forward Shane Prince went behind him and was favoring his left leg while being helped off the ice.  Hammond, who was making his first start since Oct. 28, made seven saves. He was replaced by Mike Condon. Hammond returned to the Senators bench in the second period. https://www.nhl.com/news/senators-goalie-andrew-hammond-leaves-with-injury/c-284842668 ·         Vancouver Canucks defenseman Erik Gudbranson will have surgery to repair ligament damage in his wrist and is out indefinitely.  "Erik suffered ligament damage to his wrist this season that has affected his wrist function," Canucks general manager Jim Benning said in a statement. "Continued treatment and rehabilitation have not improved his condition, and Erik and our Canucks medical team believe surgery offers the best long-term outcome and are confident in a full recovery."  Gudbranson, 24, has a goal and six points in 30 games this season. He did not play in a 4-2 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday.  https://www.nhl.com/news/gudbranson-out-indefinitely-for-canucks/c-284834218 ·         Boston Bruins forward David Pastrnak likely will miss at least the next two games after having a procedure on his right elbow on Friday.  "David underwent a successful removal of the olecranon bursa from his right elbow on Friday, December 16 at Newton Wellesley Hospital by Dr. Matthew Liebman," Bruins general manager Don Sweeney said. "He will likely be unavailable for the games on Sunday and Tuesday. His condition will be re-assessed on a day-to-day basis."  Pastrnak has 19 goals in 27 games this season, which rank him second in the League behind Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins (21).  https://www.nhl.com/news/bruins-david-pastrnak-out-at-least-two-games/c-284802290  ·         Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang was placed on injured reserve on Saturday. They initially postponed warmups by 30 minutes to fix the seal, which was leaking Freon, but the temperature did not drop quickly enough to allow the game to be played.  https://www.nhl.com/news/detroit-red-wings-carolina-hurricanes-game-postponed/c-284874074 ·         Florida Panthers owner Vincent Viola will be nominated as secretary of the Army, President-elect Donald Trump said Monday. The new 3-on-3 format echoes that which will be used in the IIHF World Hockey Championship, May of 2017.  Under the new rules, tied games which finish with the teams at even strength - be it 5-on-5, 4-on-4, 3-on-3 - will start the overtime period in the 3-on-3 format. Games which finish with the teams at 5-on-3 will begin overtime at 5-on-3, but in the event of the final hooter sounding when the teams are 5-on-4, then overtime shall commence with a 4-on-3 arrangement. If a player earns a penalty during the overtime period, the opposing team will have a 4-on-3 advantage.  The changes were agreed upon at a KHL board meeting held in Moscow on Wednesday, the 14th of December.
