The contract has an average annual value of $4.5 million through the 2023-24 season.  The Maple Leafs also signed forward Ben Smith to a one-year, $650,000 contract.  Zaitsev, 25, had 36 points (four goals, 32 assists) in 82 regular-season games, and averaged 22:01 per game, second on the Maple Leafs. He was one of six rookies to play at least 75 games for Toronto this season, helping them qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2013.  Zaitsev could have become a restricted free agent July 1. He signed a one-year entry-level contract on May 2, 2016 that had an NHL salary-cap charge of $1.775 million, according to Cap Friendly.  Smith, 28, had four points (two goals, two assists) in 36 games with the Maple Leafs after being claimed on waivers from the Colorado Avalanche on Oct. 24. Smith could have become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. He played 2016-17 on a one-year contract with a salary-cap charge of $675,000, according to Cap Friendly.  The Calgary Flames signed general manager Brad Treliving to a multiyear contract Monday. Treliving has been Flames GM since April 28, 2014.  Michel Therrien is among the candidates to interview for the coaching job with the Florida Panthers, Sportsnet reported Monday. Therrien, 53, was fired by the Montreal Canadiens on Feb. 14 even though Montreal was 31-19-8 and in first place in the Atlantic Division at the time.  He had coached the Canadiens for parts of the past five seasons and also from 2000-03, and also coached the Penguins from 2005-09. He's 406-303-82 with 23 ties in 814 regular-season games.  "We've interviewed a half-dozen guys, probably going to do another half a dozen or so," Panthers general manager Dale Tallon told Sportsnet on Saturday. "We're looking for a guy that's a good communicator, is a good teacher, a modern guy, a contemporary-type guy that can deal with these millennials and Generation Z, whatever that means. That's what we're looking for, somebody that has a little experience but who also is very knowledgeable about how to deal with young players because we have a young core."  University of Denver coach Jim Montgomery also reportedly interviewing for the job. The Carolina Hurricanes acquired goalieScott Darling from the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday in a trade for a third-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.  Darling can become an unrestricted free agent July 1.  "Scott had a very successful season in Chicago and was a big part of the Blackhawks finishing with the best record in the Western Conference," Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis said in a statement. "He played a critical role on Chicago's 2015 championship team."  Darling, 28, was 18-5-5 with a 2.38 goals-against average and .924 save percentage in 32 games (27 starts) this season as the backup to Corey Crawford. He's 39-17-9 with a 2.37 GAA, .923 save percentage and four shutouts in 75 NHL games (64 starts), all with Chicago.  Darling played in five Stanley Cup Playoff games in 2015, helping the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup.  ForwardMattias Janmark signed a one-year, $700,000 contract with the Dallas Stars on Thursday.  Janmark, 24, did not play this season because of a knee injury. He was in the final season of a two-year contract that had an average annual value of $800,000 and could have become a restricted free agent July 1.  Injuries Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby has been diagnosed with a concussion and will miss Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Second Round against the Washington Capitals at PPG Paints Arena on Wednesday (7:30 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports), coach Mike Sullivan said Tuesday.  Sullivan said Crosby will continue to be evaluated.  https://www.nhl.com/news/sidney-crosby-has-concussion-out-game-4-for-penguins/c-289221268 Minnesota Wild defenseman Marco Scandella had left arthroscopic hip surgery and is expected to be ready for the start of next season, general manager Chuck Fletcher said Tuesday.  Scandella, 27, had 13 points (four goals, nine assists) in 71 regular-season games with the Wild this season and had no points in five Stanley Cup Playoff games.  The No. 55 pick in the 2008 NHL Draft by the Wild, Scandella has 89 points (27 goals, 62 assists) in 373 regular-season games.  Anaheim Ducks defensemanKevin Bieksa is unlikely to return from injury for Game 4 of the Western Conference Second Round against the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place on Wednesday (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, SN, TVA Sports).  "Day to day," Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said Saturday. "He's going to be out a while. I don't know if it's going to be later in this series; that's the option, possible."  Bieksa injured his lower body in a 5-3, Game 1 loss Wednesday. Defenseman Cam Fowler played 27:57 in a 2-1, Game 2 loss Friday, his second game back from a knee injury, and defenseman Brandon Montour played a season-high 22:09.  Cam Ward and Eddie Lack were the Hurricanes goalies this season, when Carolina tied for 26th in the NHL with a .901 in save percentage. Ward and Lack are signed through next season.  Ward, 33, started 61 games and went 26-22-12 with a 2.69 goals-against average, .905 save percentage and two shutouts. He has spent his entire 12-year NHL career with the Hurricanes and signed a two-year contract prior to the start of this season.  Lack, 29, played 20 games (18 starts) and went 8-7-3 with a 2.64 goals-against average, .902 save percentage and one shutout. He was acquired in a trade with the Vancouver Canucks at the 2015 NHL Draft.  Darling was selected by the Arizona Coyotes (No. 153) in the 2007 NHL Draft.  Dallas Stars centerTyler Seguin had surgery Tuesday to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder but should be ready for training camp in September, general manager Jim Nill said Wednesday.  "It's something that bothered him all season, and he could have waited to do it sometime after next season and tried to play through it," Nill said. "But with the time we had, we decided it was best to get it fixed."  Nill said recovery will take about four months. Seguin will spend the next 2-4 weeks in a sling and then have another month of rehab before he can resume skating.  "He can't say when it happened; there wasn't a hit or anything like that he can point to and say that was what caused it," Nill said. "He never got better, and it ended up being a tear in the shoulder."  Seguin missed all but one game during last year's playoffs because of a calf injury and a partially cut Achilles tendon. This season he missed all of training camp but was ready for the first game of the season after injuring his ankle in a World Cup of Hockey 2016 pretournament game with Team Canada.  Nill said other players are a bit banged up but that for now no one else needs surgery.  Seguin was part of a seven-player trade between the Stars and Bruins on July 4, 2013. McPhee said discussions have focused on players teams would prefer the Golden Knights either select or don't and that he is open to acquiring NHL Draft picks.  "If they want to give us draft picks to encourage us to take a certain player or leave another player alone, we're open-minded and we're going to listen to everyone," McPhee told the AP in remarks published Thursday.
