He signed a one-year contract as an unrestricted free agent on July 1 and could have become an unrestricted free agent again at the end of the season. In his most recent start, Montoya made 31 saves in a 3-2 overtime win against the Florida Panthers on Dec. 29.  Selected by the New York Rangers with the No. 6 pick in the 2004 NHL Draft, Montoya is 59-44-20 with a 2.61 GAA and .909 save percentage in 147 NHL games with the Phoenix Coyotes, New York Islanders, Winnipeg Jets, Florida Panthers and Canadiens.  https://www.nhl.com/news/al-montoya-signs-two-year-contract-with-montreal/c-285256868 GoaltenderJaroslav Halak was placed on waivers by the New York Islanders on Friday in hope of generating the spark general manager Garth Snow said his team desperately needs. Snow said the Islanders need wins and feel that going forward with goalies Thomas Greiss and Jean-Francois Berube will give them the best chance. New York (14-15-6) is last in the Metropolitan Division and 15th in the 16-team Eastern Conference.  Halak was pulled in the second period of the Islanders' 6-4 loss at the Minnesota Wild on Thursday after allowing four goals on 24 shots, including three goals in a span of 1:20.  "Jaro wasn't sharp at all," coach Jack Capuano said afterward. "He gave up some soft goals and we had to battle back. We did against a real good team. We needed a better effort from Jaro, quite honestly. … Four goals on 24 shots isn't going to get it done."  Halak, 31, is 6-8-5 with a 3.23 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage in 21 games. He has a career record of 206-123-42 with a 2.42 GAA and a .916 save percentage in 388 games with the Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues, Washington Capitals and the Islanders.  The Islanders announced on Saturdaythat Halak had cleared waivers and has been assigned to Bridgeport of the American Hockey League.  New York acquired Halak from Washington in a trade May 1, 2014. He was on his way back to Buffalo on Monday, according to the Sabres website.  Larsson, 24, has six goals and five assists in 36 games this season. He did not play in a 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.  The 29-year-old is second on the Sharks in average ice time per game (21:06) behind defenseman Brent Burns (24:36). He has three goals and six assists in 35 games.  The Sharks recalled defenseman Mirco Mueller from the San Jose Barracuda of the American Hockey League. Hossa last played on Dec. 20 and has missed the past four games. The Devils recalled defenseman Steven Santini from Albany of the American Hockey League.  Moore was taken off the ice on a stretcher early in the first period of New Jersey's 6-2 loss to the Washington Capitals on Saturday. Moore fell awkwardly into the boards after a hit by Capitals forward Tom Wilson 3:10 into the game and remained on the ice for several minutes until he was strapped to a board. Subban was placed on injured reserve by the Nashville Predators on Sunday with an upper-body injury and his status will be re-evaluated in 2-3 weeks.  Subban, acquired from the Montreal Canadiens on June 29 in a trade for longtime Nashville captain Shea Weber, hasn't played since Dec. 15. The Dallas captain finished the game but didn't practice Monday or Tuesday.  Benn hasn't missed a game with an injury since March 14, 2013 (wrist). Introduced at last year's NHL All-Star Game in Nashville, the All-Star Tournament will feature three 20-minute games, with star players from each Division making up the four All-Star teams: Pacific, Central, Atlantic, and Metropolitan. "We're hearing complaints now about the five-day break [built into the schedule this season]. While players say they like the five-day break they're also saying they don't like the compression that goes along with it, and that's something that is of great concern to us as well."  Donald Fehr, the executive director of the NHL Players' Association, had a different tone when he spoke about the Olympics and how the players feel about where they are in the process of resolving it.  "I'm more optimistic now than I ever have been," Fehr said.  Fehr said he is convinced an agreement can be reached with the International Ice Hockey Federation on covering the finances associated with participating in the Olympics, including paying for the travel, insurance and accommodations for the players and their guests.  https://www.nhl.com/news/gary-bettman-says-nhl-looking-for-reasons-to-go-to-2018-olympics/c-285241438 ·         Carolina Hurricanes prospect Alex Nedeljkovic lived the dream of every goalie Friday.  Nedeljkovic, a second-round pick (No. 37) in the 2014 NHL Draft, was playing for the Florida Everblades of the ECHL when he scored into an empty net in the waning seconds of a 5-3 win against the Atlanta Gladiators.  Nedeljkovic became the 12th ECHL goalie to score, and the first since Brian Foster of Cincinnati in 2013. The 30-year-old Canadian recorded a save percentage of 98.97 and a goals against average of 0.33 –the best individual figures in both categories; Defenseman Matt Gilroy, (BU, Hobey) is #2 among D’s in scoring this season, with 36 pts in 44 GP.  He has 225 NHL games with Rangers, Lightning, Senators, and Panthers.  He has 11G and 37A for 48 pts in the NHL.  He has spent last 3 seasons in KHL   Steve: My KHL minute deals with Andrei Karayev, the goalie for Neftekmik Nizhnakomsk and his shutout a couple of days ago of Salavat Yulaev 1-0... "I was actually heading back down the tunnel when I heard coach call my name. I couldn't believe it. I think it was (7.6) seconds or something. I just looking down the ice and seeing the puck in the corner and just hoping it would stay in the corner.  Before the game, Alves got choked up talking about the support he's received from his wife Amanda throughout his career.  But he didn't let all of the excitement take him away from his regular job.  Alves painted his own mask, (a tribute to fellow equipment managers Skip Cunningham, Bob Gorman and Dave Paul drawn by Erik Huffine, the brother of Hurricanes video coach Chris Huffine) and sharpened skates during the game, just as he would if he weren't wearing full goalie gear.  A native of Massachusetts, Alves has worked with the Hurricanes since the 2003-04 season.
