The 22-year-old forward had 63 points (16 goals, 47 assists) in four seasons at Boston College.  Johnny Gaudreau, 23, who played at Boston College from 2011-14 and was selected with the No. 104 pick in the 2011 NHL Draft, has 58 points (17 goals, 41 assists) for the Flames this season.  "Just have fun with it right now," Gaudreau said. "Not many players get to sign a professional contract and play in a professional league like he's getting the chance to do. Just enjoy it and make the most of it because there aren't many games left in the season and have a good summer. I'll be pushing him to hopefully make a spot and have a good spot next fall."  Defenseman Charlie McAvoy will forgo his remaining eligibility at Boston University and sign an amateur tryout contract with the Boston Bruins, general manager Don Sweeney announced Wednesday. The Bruins selected McAvoy, who completed his sophomore season at BU, with the No. 14 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft. He will report to Providence of the American Hockey League for practice Thursday and should play in games this weekend.  "His development's been very good," Sweeney said. "He's been relied upon heavily as a younger player there. Grew into a leadership role this year. Obviously had a tremendous World Junior and a gold-medal effort. Their team overall was very, very talented but very young. You go through some growing pains as a result of that but he played in a lot of different situations and we're excited about his trajectory."  There is a chance McAvoy could join the Bruins before the end of the season. Boston (40-30-6) is three points ahead of the Tampa Bay Lightning for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference with six games remaining.  "That is still to be determined," said Sweeney, who is continuing negotiations with McAvoy's representatives while the 19-year-old gets his pro career started in the AHL. "You have to have a contract first, and again this is just a good first step for everybody,"  McAvoy had 26 points (five goals, 21 assists) in 38 games and was named a Hockey East All-Star for the Terriers, who lost 3-2 in overtime to Minnesota Duluth in the NCAA West Regional final Saturday.  The Bruins will have to weigh the value of working a rookie into their lineup while they attempt to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in three seasons, and completing a year on McAvoy's entry-level contract, against what McAvoy could add to the lineup.  Sweeney said that BU sophomore forward Jakob Forsbaka-Karlsson, a second-round pick (No. 45) in the 2015 draft, has not made a decision about leaving school yet.  Injuries Florida Panthers goalieJames Reimer left the game against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the second period Tuesday after colliding with Brian Boyle.  Reimer was attempting to cover the puck at the side of the net when Boyle skated in and made contact with his head.  Reimer was treated by Panthers trainers before skating off the ice with 8:53 remaining and Florida trailing 2-1. He was replaced by Reto Berra.  Carolina Hurricanes goaltenderEddie Lack was released from the hospital Monday night and was diagnosed with a neck strain.  Lack was stretchered off the ice at the end of a 4-3 overtime loss to the Detroit Red Wings at PNC Arena on Monday. He was injured on a goal by Red Wings forward Andreas Athanasiou at 1:59 of overtime.  Athanasiou skated through the neutral zone to get the puck along the right-side wall before cutting to the net. He was checked by Hurricanes forward Victor Rask before colliding with Lack and putting the puck between the right pad and the left post. Lack slumped back in the net and was quickly attended to by the Hurricanes medical staff.  Moments after the collision, Hurricanes and Red Wings players gathered near the net. Lack was taken off the ice 10 minutes later and gave a thumbs-up when he left the ice.  Lack is 7-5-3 with a 2.58 goals-against average and .902 save percentage in 17 games (15 starts) this season. He took to Twitter on Monday to address his condition, writing, "everything looks alright (sic)."  Lack's playing status has yet to be announced but the Hurricanes recalled goalie Alex Nedeljkovic from Florida of the ECHL on an emergency basis.  Toronto Maple Leafs goaltenderFrederik Andersen will not start against the Florida Panthers at Air Canada Centre on Tuesday (7:30 p.m. ET; TSN4, FS-F, NHL.TV) because of an upper-body injury.  Andersen practiced Monday but coach Mike Babcock said goaltender Curtis McElhinney will start.  The Maple Leafs said Andersen is day to day. He was removed after the first period of a 5-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.  Babcock said he doesn't think Andersen will be out long-term. The Maple Leafs have eight regular-season games remaining; after Tuesday, they play at the Nashville Predators on Thursday.  Patrick Sharpof the Dallas Stars will have hip surgery Tuesday, ending a difficult season for the 35-year-old forward.  "It's tough to make that decision to sit out and get healthy, but I think it's the right thing to do," he said.  Sharp has 18 points (eight goals, 10 assists) in 48 games this season. He's dealt with two concussions and constant hip pain, and his father, Ian Sharp, has leukemia.  Ian Sharp was diagnosed with leukemia seven years ago, and the disease worsened this year. He received stem-cell treatments that have worked and he is home in Ontario. Sharp is the Stars candidate for the Bill Masterton Trophy, given each season by the NHL to a player who displays the attributes of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.  Sharp can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 but said he's not thinking about next season at this point. Nill didn't rule out bringing him back.  "We're going to get the surgery done, let him heal. He's going to train, and then let's take a look at him," Nill said. "We've had conversations. If he comes back, he wants to be in Dallas. He thinks he's a Dallas Star."  Tampa Bay Lightning centerSteven Stamkos participated in every practice drill, including the power play, Wednesday and said he's very close to returning to the lineup.  Stamkos, who had arthroscopic surgery for a lateral meniscus tear in his right knee on Nov. 17, practiced on a line with Yanni Gourde and Adam Erne. Stamkos also participated with the Lightning's second power-play unit for the first time since his return to practice.  The Lightning expected Stamkos to miss 4-6 months after the surgery; March 17 was the four-month mark. Stamkos said he was unlikely to play against the Detroit Red Wings at Amalie Arena on Thursday (7:30 p.m. ET; SUN, FS-D, NHL.TV) "unless something drastically changes."  Stamkos can now be considered day to day, coach Jon Cooper said. The Lightning host the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday and Dallas Stars on Sunday to close a four-game homestand.  Detroit Red Wings forwardLuke Glendening will miss the final six games of the regular season after fracturing his ankle and foot, according to MLive.com.  Glendening sustained the injury during a 4-3 overtime win at the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday. He played 1:35 before leaving the game in the first period and did not play in a 4-1 loss at the Hurricanes on Tuesday.  Detroit general manager Ken Holland told the website it is unknown whether Glendening, who has 14 points (three goals, 11 assists) in 74 games this season, will need surgery.  Minnesota Wild forwardZach Parise is likely to miss at least one game with an eye injury but will not be out long-term, coach Bruce Boudreau said Wednesday.  "His eye looks pretty black and blue, but he can see and he's fine as far as that goes," Boudreau told the Wild website. "A little sore in his upper body, but I don't think he's going to be out for a long period of time."  Parise was injured when he was high-sticked by Tom Wilson of the Washington Capitals during their game Tuesday. The stick blade went under Parise's visor and he then collided with Washington's Jay Beaglewhile falling to the ice.  The Wild said the eye is swollen and Parise was to have tests performed Wednesday.  Parise has 37 points (17 goals, 20 assists) in 64 games this season, with six points (one goal, five assists) in his past seven games.  Milestones/Records/Honors/Deaths: Brian Gionta - On a milestone night where the Buffalo Sabres captain was celebrated for playing his 1,000th career game, he scored a second period goal to give his team a 3-0 in what would become a 4-2 win against the Florida Panthers. Tampa Bay Lightning right wing Nikita Kucherov, Dallas Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen and Anaheim Ducks center Ryan Getzlaf have been named the NHL's "Three Stars" for the week ending March 26. Kucherov posted 5-2-7 in three games, all multi-point performances, to lead the Lightning (36-29-9, 81 points) to a pair of victories and help the team remain within three points of the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.  Lehtonen went 3-0-1 with a 0.98 goals-against average, .959 save percentage and one shutout to guide the Stars (31-33-11, 73 points) to seven out of a possible eight standings points.  Getzlaf shared the League lead with seven assists in three games - all wins - to propel the Ducks (41-23-11, 93 points) into first place in the Pacific Division.  Gary Doak Passing - Gary Doak, who was a defenseman with the Boston Bruins when they won the Stanley Cup in 1970, died on Saturday at the age of 71. Doak played eight Stanley Cup Playoff games in 1970 when the Bruins defeated the St. Louis Blues in four games to win their first championship since 1941.  He had 130 points (23 goals, 107 assists) and 908 penalty minutes in 789 games with the Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers from 1965-1981.  Doak played with the Bruins from 1965-70 and 1972-81. In 14 seasons with Boston, he had 101 points (20 goals, 81 assists) and 656 penalty minutes in 609 regular-season games.  Doak was an assistant coach for the Bruins from 1981-85 and coach for the University of Massachusetts-Boston from 1985-87.  Suspensions/Fines:  San Jose Sharks forwardMicheal Haley has been suspended for one game, without pay, for roughing Nashville Predators forward Calle Jarnkrok during NHL Game No. 1114 in Nashville on Saturday, March 25, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced Monday.  The incident occurred at 12:56 of the third period. Haley was assessed a match penalty.  Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, Haley will forfeit $3,472.22.  NHL Debuts: http://www.hockey-reference.com/leagues/NHL_2017_debut.html   Other Interesting Stories: The Detroit Red Wings' 25-season streak of qualifying for the Stanley Cup Playoffs ended after a 4-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena on Tuesday. The loss, combined with wins by the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs, eliminated Detroit from postseason contention for the first time since 1990-91.  Boston defeated the Nashville Predators 4-1. Toronto defeated the Florida Panthers 3-1.  Detroit was playing its third game in three days; it won the prior two in overtime (3-2 against the Minnesota Wild on Sunday and 4-3 at Carolina on Monday).  Cam Ward made 21 saves for the Hurricanes (34-27-14), are four points behind Boston for the second wild card into the playoffs from the Eastern Conference.  The Hurricanes have a 12-game point streak (8-0-4). Nine players had a point for Carolina on Tuesday.  They won the Stanley Cup four times, tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for most in that span, and came within a game of winning it a fifth when they lost Game 7 of the Final to the Penguins in 2009. They went to the Final six times.  They won the Presidents' Trophy six times, three times more than any other team in that span. They won 1,133 regular-season games, 104 more than any other team, and earned 2,536 points, 209 more than any other team.  They set records for wins in a season (62 in 1995-96), road wins in a season (31 in 2005-06), consecutive road wins (12 in 2005-06) and consecutive home wins (23 in 2011-12), and they tied the record for home wins in a season (36 in 1995-96).  For 21 seasons, they didn't come close to missing the playoffs. They finished in the top four in their conference 18 times and had a cushion of at least a dozen points the other three times. It wasn't until the past few seasons that they had to fight to make the playoffs.  The Red Wings streak was not the longest in NHL history. The Boston Bruins made the playoffs 29 straight seasons from 1967-68 through 1995-96. The Chicago Blackhawks made the playoffs for 28 straight from 1969-70 through 1996-97. The St. Louis Blues also made the playoffs for 25 straight from 1979-80 through 2003-04.  The Penguins now have the longest streak at 11 seasons, including this one. The Blackhawks are next at nine.  Can the Penguins surpass the Red Wings streak? Fifteen years from now, Sidney Crosby will be 44. Evgeni Malkin will be 45.  Seventeen years from now, Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane each will be 45.  This feels like the end of an era in Detroit, and it is. The great Gordie Howe died June 10. Ilitch died Feb. 10. Now the streak is over, and Joe Louis Arena is closing.  1991 -- Last time the Red Wings picked in the top 10 of the NHL Draft; they took forward Martin Lapointe with the No. 10 selection. From 1992 through 2013, they picked no higher than 19th. Craig Cunningham, the former NHL forward who collapsed on the ice before an American Hockey League game in November, will drop the ceremonial first puck during Arizona Coyotes Fan Appreciation Night at Gila River Arena on April 8, when the Coyotes host the Minnesota Wild. Cunningham, 26, was the captain for Arizona's AHL affilate in Tucson when he went into cardiac arrest on the ice before a game against Manitoba on Nov. 19.   Cunningham, who had to have his left leg amputated and is walking with help of a prosthetic, returned to Tuscon with his mother, Heather, for a ceremonial puck drop before a Roadrunners game against the San Jose Barracuda on March 25. The Coyotes are giving fans the opportunity to congratulate Cunningham on his courage, willpower and perseverance through his rehabilitation.  A fourth-round pick (No. 97) of the Boston Bruins in the 2010 NHL Draft, Cunningham had three goals and five assists in 65 games with the Bruins and Coyotes.    Preview of what we will see - https://www.nhl.com/news/nhl-centennial-fan-arena-comes-to-newark/c-288084178 The Colorado Avalanche and Ottawa Senators will face off in a pair of regular-season games in Stockholm, Sweden, as part of the 2017 SAP NHL Global Series, the League announced on Friday. The Avalanche and Senators will play back-to-back games at the Ericsson Globe on Friday, Nov. 10 and Saturday, Nov. 11. The 2017 SAP NHL Global Series™ will mark the sixth time the NHL has traveled to Europe to play regular-season games and the first such time since the 2011 Compuware NHL Premiere™, which took place in Berlin, Germany; Helsinki, Finland; and Stockholm, Sweden. These games reward the legion of loyal and passionate international fans by featuring some of the NHL's biggest stars and generating interest in the League worldwide. The games between Colorado and Ottawa on Nov. 10 and Nov. 11 will be the 21st and 22nd NHL regular-season games played in Europe. They also will be the seventh and eighth NHL regular-season games played in Sweden.  The game on Nov. 10 will start at 8 p.m. CET (2 p.m. ET / Noon MT), with Colorado serving as the home team. Gustavsson redirected a pass through the goal mouth, then was credited with the goal as the last Bakersfield player to touch the puck before an errant Gulls pass went into the San Diego net at 16:56 of the third.  It was the first goal of Gustavsson's pro career. He became the 12th goalie to score in the AHL's 81-year history and the first since Reto Berra of Lake Erie did it against Chicago on Jan. 16, 2015.   Gustavsson also did his regular job well, making 30 saves for the Edmonton Oilers' AHL affiliate.
