Defenseman Jakub Nakladal had his contract terminated by the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday. Nakladal, 28, was a minus-4 in 14:30 of ice time per game in three games this season. He last played Nov. 8 against the New Jersey Devils. He was unable to put pressure on his right leg as he skated to the bench. "For me, I'm just preparing for the worst-case scenario. That's how it goes. We won't know anything on this injury until we hear from the doctors. We won't know the timeframe. It could be less. It could be more. As a coach when you're going through it you think, 'OK, what are we going to put in place here to make sure we can get through this time.'"  Gaudreau left the game at 7:22 of the third period and didn't return after taking a slash to his hand. "Again during the past few weeks, it felt like something wasn't right. Obviously this is a bit of shock for my family and me, but I am hopeful I will be able to return to the ice and continue playing the game that I love."  Bickell, 30, has one goal in seven games this season. He was acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks on June 15 and won the Stanley Cup three times with Chicago (2010, 2013, 2015).  "First and foremost, the most important thing is for Bryan to take care of himself, and our thoughts are with him and his family," Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis said. "He will need to take some time to rest in the immediate future, and we will support him as he takes the necessary steps for his health. We ask that his privacy be respected during the process."  "Our thoughts are with Bryan, his family and the Carolina Hurricanes during this challenging time," Blackhawks president and CEO John McDonough said. "He has built so many lasting relationships in Chicago both inside and outside of the Blackhawks organization based on his play on the ice and character off of it. Together, we will keep him in our thoughts during his fight against the disease."  "It's pretty shocking," Chicago captain Jonathan Toews  "What can you say? I think everyone in this room, in this organization, as close as we all are to [Bickell], our hearts go out to him and wish him the best health possible. Hopefully he can hang in there and find ways to stay strong despite his condition. Obviously it's kind of crazy for him. He probably has a lot of people reaching out to him. I'm sure all the guys in this locker room that know him really well will reach out and send him a message and offer their support. It's pretty shocking, but we're all thinking about him right now."  Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said, "Tough news today on [Bickell]. He's a special guy. It's tough to hear something like that. We're thinking about him and our thoughts and prayers are with him. He has a tough road ahead of him, but we're thinking of [Bickell] as he was special for us, and instrumental in us having a lot of success here. Athanasiou, 22, was injured in the first period of a 3-1 victory against the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday at Joe Louis Arena, on a hit by Canucks defenseman Nikita Tryamkin. Rask went 4-0-0 with a 0.75 goals-against average, .970 save percentage and two shutouts to lead the Bruins (10-6-0, 20 points) to four wins in five games as well as second place in the Atlantic Division. The GMs aren't eyeing any rule change recommendations now but left the meeting with the intent to monitor those three aspects of the game, along with many others, as a way to prepare for more in-depth discussions when they meet again for three days in Boca Raton, Florida, in March.  "This isn't a meeting where you make fundamental changes," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. "It's really more of an update."  The GMs specifically looked at hitting from the blindside and discussed the safety element of it, a reaction to the hit delivered by Toronto Maple Leafs center Nazem Kadri on Vancouver Canucks left wing Daniel Sedin on Nov. 5.  Blindside hits are legal unless the main point of contact is the head and contact with the head was avoidable.  The general managers were split evenly between those who thought Kadri's hit was OK and those who felt that type of hit should be removed from the game.  The GMs went through a review of the new policy of using unaffiliated concussion spotters to monitor each game from the Player Safety Room in the New York office. They are trying to determine if goalies who have to relieve a goalie being pulled by the concussion spotter should be allowed time to warm up.  Most recently, New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist came in for Antti Raanta in the third period of a 2-2 game against the Canucks on Nov. 8. He did not get any warmup time and allowed two goals on six shots before Raanta returned. The Rangers lost 5-3.  "The notion that you need to have a warmup when you replace the goaltender, in most of the cases it doesn't happen anyway, but again it's something to keep an eye on," Commissioner Bettman said. "You don't make changes in the middle of the season anyway so we'll keep an eye on it, we'll see how many times it happens and whether or not it needs to be addressed."  The managers also discussed the legality of shootout goals, paying particularly close attention to the one scored by Florida Panthers center Vincent Trocheck on Oct. 18, a goal that led to a 4-3 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning.  Trocheck lost control of the puck as he got in close, but the puck never stopped moving, he regained control of it and scored. The question is whether the puck kept moving forward, which is part of the rule.  There appears to be a movement among the GMs to look at amending the shootout rules to the international hockey rules, which allow for the same shooter to continue taking attempts after the third round.  Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong brought up the idea as a way to make the shootout more exciting with the best shooters getting the opportunity for multiple attempts.  "I've got to admit, it's entertaining," Fletcher said. "We all remember [at the 2014 Sochi Olympics] with T.J. Oshie and I remember going back even further in the [2007] World Juniors, I think it was Peter Mueller versus Jonathan Toews. That was a lot of drama and they kept scoring. It was great. It's certainly something to consider. The Coyotes announced they are in plans with Catellus Development Corp., the master developer for the Arizona State University Athletic Facilities District, to work toward building a 16,000-plus seat arena with an attached 4,000 seat multisport facility in Tempe, Arizona.  “I think first and foremost it'll stop all the speculation as to what may or may not happen to the franchise," Commissioner Bettman said. "Secondly, it will, I believe, based on the locations I'm hearing about, ensure that from an attendance standpoint this franchise can thrive and I think it will assure the long-term future of this franchise beyond doubt."  The plan is for the Coyotes to play in the main arena, with the attached second facility being used for Coyotes practices, Arizona State athletics, youth hockey practices and games, and community events.  A second phase of the project is expected to include a hotel in the area.  The Coyotes have played in Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona, since December 2003. Prior to that, they played at America West Arena (now Talking Stick Resort Arena) in Phoenix after moving to Arizona from Winnipeg in 1996. Still no love in national rankings, but they did move from 40th to 33rd in Pairwise rankings Notre Dame and Northeastern skated to a 0-0 tie through two periods of play before a Zamboni breakdown and subsequent problems with ice conditions forced the game to be suspended on Sunday afternoon at Matthews Arena. When one of Northeastern Zamboni’s broke down in the left corner of the ice, that portion of the ice was unable to freeze. After a delay, the ice was eventually deemed unplayable.  The teams will attempt to make up the third period later in the season at a date to be determined if scheduling allows. Read more:http://www.uscho.com/rankings/d-i-mens-poll/#ixzz4Q9G7C5WE   KHL Minute: Wayne: CSKA boss Dmitry Kvartalnov had never seen his Army Men lose against Lokomotiv in six previous encounters – but a freakish blunder from defenseman Mikhail Naumenkov and a late from Denis Mosalyov shattered that streak.  They condemned CSKA to a second consecutive loss since the international break and, just as in Podolsk on Wednesday, the Red-and-Blues gave up a lead on the way to defeat.  True, it was a less comfortable position than the 2-0 advantage Kvartalnov’s team held after 40 minutes in the Moscow suburbs, but with the head coach lamenting his players’ inability to see out winning positions as readily as earlier in the season the loss represents another blow.  Igor Ozhiganov gave CSKA a 13th-minute lead on the power play but Lokomotiv soon profited from a catalogue of errors. First a faulty line-change led to a penalty, then Mikhail Naumenkov flipped a lovely backhand shot over the shoulder of his own goalie, Ilya Sorokin. Petri Kontiola was credited with the goal, Naumenkov stormed back to the sidelines slamming his stick into the bench.  The game remained evenly-poised from then on until Mosalyov grabbed the winner with 10 minutes to play. Alexander Kadeikin’s backhand pass to the slot caused confusion; Mosalyov reacted fastest to snaffle up the chance. An empty-net goal from Kontiola sealed the win.     Steve: I'll Kovalchuk recorded his 250th career point in the KHL in a 9-0 win, 15th KHL record is 18.  75-11 goals. Bondra, who scored 472 of those goals for the Washington Capitals, met Fatima while representing the Capitals and coaching at the Pavlikovsky Hockey School program at the Zayed Sports Ice Rink in Abu Dhabi on Sunday and Monday. The school is designed to help youth players with their skills.   "I'm excited to help grow the game in the UAE and use my experience to teach young hockey players in the region," Bondra told the Capitals website Tuesday.
