The diabetes community is fortunate to have so many one of a kind warriors and Thom Solo is top of the list in my opinion. His advocacy efforts at an early age + pursuit of art as a career = my dream guest. In this episode we discuss Thom’s artistic journey, runway lows, diabetes and dating, his fashion family, the LGTBQ+ community, and speaking things into existence.

BIO:

Thom Solo attended the Museum of Fine Arts School, Boston. While in college, Thom developed a love for creating sculptures using different mediums. Trained by his college professor on creating wearable art, he took an immediate gravitation toward shoe design.

Thom launched his eponymous shoe label in 2008 with his first private collection. By 2014 he had achieved mainstream success, creating custom shoes for style icons and music influencers including Lady Gaga, Demi Lovato, Kelly Clarkson, Lana Del Rey, and Britney Spears.

Thom’s work is on permanent display at the Peabody Essex Museum and was part of the Gender Bending Fashion exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston in 2019.

In 2020 Thom decided to expand his brand further by assembling a team of industry experts and working with the best factories and suppliers in Italy to bring his first ready-to-wear women’s shoe collection to life, debuting in September 2021 for delivery in the S/S 2022 season.
