Leaded Gasoline was developed by GM to solve the problem of engine knock in the early 20th century. There were other ways to solve engine knock, but they all involved selling LESS OIL (gasp). Also GM couldn't patent them. If only we could have known at the time that lead was a deadly poison. Oh, wait, we did.
