The 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, in which four innocent little Black girls were murdered, was one of the most horrendous and unconscionable events to occur in Alabama. Thomasville High School began offering a new modern manufacturing career tech class this academic year with 38 students registered. Burkes Mechanical Contracting of Thomasville is one of many area companies and industries that encouraged the school administration to develop the class. Burkes stepped up in the first month by dressing all the students in professional work equipment, including safety glasses, hard hats, safety vests and ear plugs. The Wilcox Historical Society, in partnership with Chris Pringle Construction, has begun a 0,000 restoration project at the historical society’s headquarters, the Wilcox Female Institute. As part of the restoration, the institute’s original solid-bronze bell, which dates to 1850, has been removed from storage in the basement of Camden Baptist Church, where it had been kept for approximately 50 years. The 600-pound bell was transported to Cincinnati, Ohio, where it will be restored and tuned before being returned to Camden. For decades, Dr. Sumpter Blackmon has been a familiar face in Camden, where he has practiced family medicine and cared for generations of patients in rural Wilcox County.
