I don’t know how many times it’s happened to me over the years. Someone asks me for something or says something to start a conversation but I respond poorly. Sometimes I’m not paying proper attention or I respond sarcastically or dismissive to what was said. Within seconds things turn bad. Feelings are hurt, tempers flare, or someone shuts down and I'm scrambling to smooth things over.
