Those Pearly Gates: A Homegrown Novel
Julie Cannon was in fine form when she wrote this series. I am a gardener and am from the South which is one reason this whole series spoke to me so warmly. The characters are realistic and wholesome (something I do not find often). I did not want the book to end for I had been truly swept away for a while.
Prophetic
Reading this peek into her southern outlook and knowing what happens to her latter makes this book even more precious (in the best sense of the word).
Five Stars
Great book.
Another fabulous book! A great family saga for sure-A++
In this third book by Julie Cannon, it picks up now with Imogene, the main character who is now married to Rev. Lemuel, after promising his late wife, her best friend Martha, that she would do so. The chemistry though, isn't really right, and it seems that no matter what Imo does, she just can't get into what a preacher's wife is 'supposed' to do. Her friend Wanda, at the Kut n' Kurl is having a real snit about Imo taking Martha's place in the minister's life, so she refuses to give her the famous recipe for Jam Cake, as she feels Imo shouldn't have to be part of the family.
Loutishie, Imo's niece is now a senior in high school. She doesn't really care for the Rev. Lemuel very much, and when he wants to sell the precious farmhouse, and move into the parsonage, Loutishie is beyond anger with him, as the farmhouse is her beloved land with the garden she and Imo share together.Lou absolutely refuses to leave there, and once she hears of this news, she goes and remains at the farmhouse, refusing to come back to the parsonage and discuss anything with the Reverend.
And Jeanette, Imo's other girl is married and settled down with the minister Montgomery. As time goes along though, she has an obvious serious medical problem as she is experiencing many bad fainting spells. She refuses to go the doctor until her problem escalates, and she becomes deathly ill finally.
Reverend Lemuel is also having a problem driving, and having very close calls behind the wheel. After many near-tragic accidents, poor Imo has to drive him around all over the place and on visitations, etc., until she is worn to a frazzle.
A tragedy happens during the last part of the book with one of Imo's dearest friends, Lillian. Imo tries to help her out of a very grave depression along with everything else.
Those Pearly Gates is divine!
If you enjoy Jan Karon's Mitford Series, you'll love Julie Cannon's Homegrown Series! (Truelove and Homegrown Tomatoes, 'Mater Biscuit, and newly released Those Pearly Gates).
