This is devotional thought number 39 in our devotional series, God’s Promises are Sure!
“Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4).
Yesterday, we briefly discussed the blessing of recognizing our spiritual poverty. Today, we need to discuss how God handles the feelings part of the equation. While feelings are not everything, it sure feels like it sometimes. We are complete beings. We possess spiritual, physical, intellectual, and emotional qualities. If one of these is not functioning optimally, we can become miserable and hopeless. The emotions (or feelings) often determine how we perceive the other aspects, whether for good or for ill.
God does not ignore emotions even though there’s much more to life. When we cry, He cares. When we are sad, elated, fearful, enraged, despondent, etc., it does not escape His notice. In the case of those who have recognized their spiritual poverty and humbled themselves before the Lord so He can handle it, they often have residual sadness. Think of the number of times you have failed to keep your promises not to dive back into the sins you now loathe. Think of those you’ve disappointed (including yourself). Think of the many missed opportunities. Think of the impact some of your former sin habits have had on your health and relationships. This makes us sad. Sometimes our sadness gets to a level of deep mourning. Jesus is saying that He will comfort those who now realize the mess we have made of our lives, have surrendered to Him, and are responding. He stands to bring relief for every care we surrender to Him. He does not condemn those who surrender our sinfulness to Him. He takes away the doubt, sadness, and guilt when we learn to accept His blessing.
If you are sad because of your powerlessness to live a holy life in your own strength, and are willing to give your all to Jesus, He will, through the power of the Holy Spirit, bring you comfort and peace. Talk to Him about it. Claim His precious promises, and give thanks. The mouth of the Lord has spoken.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
