This is devotional thought number 11 in our devotional series, “The Gospel According to Psalms.”
“In the Lord put I my trust: How say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain? For, lo, the wicked bend their bow, They make ready their arrow upon the string, That they may privily shoot at the upright in heart.” (Psalm 11:1–2).
What if you were a fugitive hiding from the most powerful men in the world simply because you loved God; and your love for God brought favor to you in all you set your heart to accomplish. Say these powerful men were envious of your influence and would stop at nothing to exterminate you from the face of the earth? Does this sound like a movie trailer? Perhaps. However, it is not far fetched because this is exactly what David experienced as King Saul was bent on destroying him. The King knew that his reign was scheduled to self-destruct because he was not faithful to God, and David’s influence was growing as he fulfilled God’s purpose.
This is not only a twisted plot from ancient Bible history about a man on the run. All of God’s people have experienced this, to a greater or lesser degree, at some point in life. The devil is our powerful enemy! He will stop at nothing to destroy us. God’s favor is following His people, even though we feel like fugitives at times. As David trusted God in our theme text, though the wicked have loaded their weapons and trained them at our heads to fire at will, God will defend us. He will protect the souls of those who keep our trust in Him.
You will note that our theme text seems to be left without resolution. What is the outcome for those who keep the faith, though the enemy continues to assail us? I am so glad you asked. “When the foundations are destroyed, what can the godly accomplish?” The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord’s throne is in heaven. His eyes watch; his eyes examine all people. The Lord approves of the godly, but he hates the wicked and those who love to do violence. May the Lord rain down burning coals and brimstone on the wicked! A whirlwind is what they deserve! Certainly the Lord is just; he rewards godly deeds; the upright will experience his favor.” (Psalm 11:3–7, NET).
This has been the gospel according to Psalms. Live by it!—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
