“Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.” (Matthew 5:8).

Seeing God is a glorious thing! When patriarchs like Jacob, Moses, and Abraham just got a glimpse of His condescended essence, not even the fullness of His eternal presence, their lives were changed forever. What does it mean to see God? And how can we be pure in heart?

Seeing God is an awesome experience, which no human being on earth has ever fully experienced. When Moses was in the Mount with God, he didn’t even see His face, and Moses’ countenance glowed like Saturn reflects the rays of the sun. God’s presence was so glorious, the people told Moses to veil his face because he still radiated God’s brightness. When Isaiah saw the throne of God, high and lifted up, he immediately sensed his woe. He realized his humanity could not stand in the face of God and live. When the three Hebrew boys experienced God in their fiery furnace, the devouring fire of God nullified the earthly flames and smoke of the furnace.

Seeing God is also having new vision. Whenever we are not in agreement with God, we can see life with our eyes and yet not be aware of that which is eternal. The truth of God’s Word will be hidden from our view. The import of His eternal kingdom will have no impact. The power of His salvation will not change our lives. Without humility before the King, our eyes and lives will remain closed to His transformative power.

Seeing God face to face, in the fulness of His glory is the ultimate reward. Those who love Him and submit to His will see His face and have His name written in their foreheads. Now we see as through a dismal window, but then we will know Him like we know our closest friends whom we see without obstruction.

What does it mean to be pure in heart? I will not multiply words here. Purity of heart comes when we surrender our sinfulness to God in exchange for His righteousness. Purity of heart comes when we confess and forsake our sins. Purity of heart comes when we let the mind of Christ replace our low thinking and impure motives; when we invest time in prayer, Bible study, worship, and selfless service. When the Holy Spirit is welcomed in to our lives and we embrace all that He teaches, we become transformed into the image of Jesus Christ, and purity of heart is the blessed outcome. Then, and only then, will we see God.

Ask the Lord for a sense of your spiritual poverty today, and get ready to receive the wealth of His Spirit’s presence. Get ready to receive His eternal reward.—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
