This is devotional thought number 12 in our devotional series, “The Gospel According to Psalms.”
“The Lord’s words are absolutely reliable. They are as untainted as silver purified in a furnace on the ground, where it is thoroughly refined. You, Lord, will protect them; you will continually shelter each one from these evil people, for the wicked seem to be everywhere, when people promote evil.” (Psalm 12:6–8, NET).
I love when people make and keep their promises. It may be a function of my temperament. But, then again, who wouldn’t be happy when they experienced the steady hand of a reliable person? I’m talking about the kind of person you ask to pray for you, and they actually do it, as promised. I’m talking about the kind of person that says they will help you with that massive problem you mentioned, and they come through. I’m talking about the kind of person that agrees to babysit for you when your spouse is away for a month and you just need a few hours to clear your mind, by yourself. Contrary to the popular saying, promises are meant to be kept, and not broken.
Our theme text underscores God’s perfect example. David said that God is absolutely reliable. If you have ever put your trust in Him, I am sure you would agree. He always answers His children’s prayers, even if His answers are not always what we had hoped. He has our best interest at heart. He always provides for us, even if His provision is simply food, clothing, and shelter. Sometimes He provides palace-like provisions. Sometimes He provides the basic necessities. But just know that He always provides, just like He promised.
While all I have said is true, the context of today’s passage is narrowly focused. Here’s God promise: ““Because of the violence done to the oppressed, because of the painful cries of the needy, I will spring into action,” says the Lord. “I will provide the safety they so desperately desire.”” (Psalm 12:5, NET). God hears the cries of the needy and oppressed and springs into action. At just the right time, our heavenly Father springs into action and protects, delivers, and saves those who continually trust Him to do so. At just the right time, our heavenly Father thwarts evil plans and becomes a Shelter in the time of His people’s storm. Interestingly, God is so good that His blessings of the needy and oppressed spill over into the lives of those who don’t know Him yet. Sometimes He sends His children to their aid, to relieve their suffering and end their oppression, and their minds are drawn to Him. Regardless of how He does this all, He will soon reward His faithful children. Jesus will soon return and ultimately break the back of oppression, hatred, disrespect, and violence. He will soon put an end to all that is ungodly; and for this, I am thankful. I hope you are too.
This has been the gospel according to Psalms. Live by it!—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
