This is devotional thought number 15 in our devotional series, “The Gospel According to Psalms.”

“As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on his faithful followers. For he knows what we are made of; he realizes we are made of clay.” (Psalm 103:13–14, NET).

Some of us (like me) have not enjoyed the privilege of experiencing the compassionate care of a loving earthly father, and have had to learn the meaning of our theme text by spiritual means. Others of you have been blessed to hear the compassionate voice, see the tender look, and feel the reassuring embrace of the men who were pleased to be called your fathers.

One of the reasons the idea of our heavenly Father being compassionate toward us is so sweet, regardless of our upbringing, is that everyone wins! If you had a wonderful father, you win! If you had an abusive father, you win! If you have never met your father, you win! Everybody wins! What is the prize? The prize it that you can rest assured that anytime you need to talk, your heavenly Father is ready to listen and help. He’s always looking out for your best interest, even when it does not seem so to you. He is always arranging ways to bless you, over and above your daily necessities. He is always available to pick up the pieces when your life becomes complicated and you experience suffering, pain, doubts, and temptations.

But wait, there's more! As if all I said wasn’t great enough, our heavenly Father knows what we are made of. He knows mortal people make mistakes, at times. He knows that even once we fully surrender our wills to God, we might (not must) have temporary relapses and entertain old practices that lead us down the wrong path. This is why He constantly sends us the blessed Holy Spirit to remind us of the path of righteousness. This is why He is constantly dispatching holy angels to minister to us in our times of need. He knows we are frail human beings; therefore, He stops at nothing to provide us the help we need to overcome, in all areas of our lives. It’s not that He is in any way complicit in our mistakes; nor does He simply turn the other way as if nothing happened. No! He simply recognizes our need, and supplies it. If we need a tender touch, He supplies it. If we need a stern bit of chastisement, He supplies it. In all things, His provisions are so arranged to bring Him the most glory, and us the most benefit. Give thanks.

This has been the gospel according to Psalms. Live by it!—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
