This is devotional thought number 45 in our devotional series, God’s Promises are Sure!

“Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.” (Matthew 5:10–12).

There are risks, and there are rewards in this life. There are also risks involved in receiving God’s rewards. Was that complicated?

God’s reward for those who are faithful, is eternal life with Him, where there will be no more sin, sickness, pain, or death. The risk we all take by trusting God is that we will will be persecuted, imperiled, lied on, or sometimes worse. For believers, this conundrum is a calculated risk. We all know that God has already promised not to ever leave us or forsake us. We all know He has already endured the hottest trials the devil can throw at us, so He can give us the victory. Therefore, although the stakes are high when we choose to serve the Lord, the alternative is completely unacceptable. Jesus endured trials and persecutions unfairly, for us. He will strengthen us to endure our trials, which we actually deserve when you really think about it. Besides, we have seen many stalwarts endure the fiercest trials and temptations. We have seen God purify them like the finest gold. If they could stand firm, so can we.

I am encouraged by the testimony of the faithful recorded in Hebrews 11. It lets me know that God is the ultimate Promise Keeper. He will never leave us alone. He is able to restore, a million-fold, whatever loss we suffer in this life, when He returns. When I consider the trials, the following two passages give me hope as I await the heavenly reward Jesus promised: “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” (Romans 8:18). “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” (2 Corinthians 4:17–18).
