This is devotional thought number 47 in our devotional series, God’s Promises are Sure!
“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” (Luke 11:13).
Why do some of us make things so complicated? Jesus said that those who love Him (implied by the “Father” reference) absolutely and unequivocally will indeed receive the Holy Spirit if we continue to ask Him. Why would we choose to jump through all sorts of blasphemous hoops like attempting to command the Spirit to do stuff, slapping people in the foreheads, awaiting some blabbery manifestation, or a shake, rattle, and roll manifestation for reception of the blessed Holy Spirit? Let the Bible be your guide and the same Holy Spirit enlighten your eyes on this glorious matter, and give thanks for the simplicity of truth.
Here’s a fuller context for today’s theme passage: “He also said to them: “Suppose one of you has a friend and goes to him at midnight and says to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I don’t have anything to offer him.’ Then he will answer from inside and say, ‘Don’t bother me! The door is already locked, and my children and I have gone to bed. I can’t get up to give you anything.’ I tell you, even though he won’t get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his friend’s persistence, he will get up and give him as much as he needs. “So I say to you, keep asking, and it will be given to you. Keep searching, and you will find. Keep knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who searches finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” (Luke 11:5–13 , HCSB). We must be persistent with God; it deepens our commitment to and desire for that which we request. Even faulty human beings seem to respond to persistent petitioners. How much more responsive will God be to those who persist in ask for all He has promised, seeking His face daily, and knocking until the floodgates of heaven are opened to flood our lives with every good and perfect gift? Jesus promised that since earthy benefactors will give gifts and favors to those they either love or want to just get off their backs, He is far more willing to respond to sincere seekers of His grace. In today’s context, the ultimate reward for our persistence, is the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Ask God to create in you a clean heart. Ask Him to give you a right spirit. As Him to anoint you with His power and give you the fullness of the presence of the blessed Holy Spirit. Know that He never comes short of fulfilling His promises, and in simplicity of faith in His Word, receive ye the Holy Spirit. The mouth of the Lord has spoken.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
