This is devotional thought number 48 in our devotional series, God’s Promises are Sure!
“When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.” (Matthew 8:16–17).
When God does something as miraculous, spectacular, and transformative as taking upon Him our sorrows, infirmities, and illnesses we must take note. The Bible says: “Surely he hath borne our griefs, And carried our sorrows: Yet we did esteem him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted.” (Isaiah 53:4). Do you realize that Jesus did not have to go through with the plan of salvation? I mean this, in the sense that if He had allowed us to bear our own punishment for our sins, He would have been justified. Of course, we know that He promised to give His life in our stead and He always keeps His promises, but He could have chosen not to promise anything of the sort. I am so glad He did. I am so glad He went to the endth decree to save us. I am so glad our Father loves us so much that He gave us His special Son, so we could believe on Him and live forever.
Have you ever thought of what Jesus actually went through to save you? Death, as bad as it is, was nothing compared to the anguish Jesus suffered as He hung on the cross feeling separated and forsaken by His Father. We cannot fathom the import of Jesus assuming human form and needing to eat, drink, sleep, be somewhat dependent and experiencing the sufferings of others. How must it have felt when He was in the Garden of Gethsemane praying that His will would align with His Father’s when at no time in eternal history would that potential distinction and need to stay focused been required. Jesus had ever been one with the Father, and their wills were so enmeshed, we would never see a distinction. When Jesus took His position on the cross, He had the compounded effects of all human suffering (for all times) and woe sitting squarely upon His shoulders. Yet, He carried it all the way to the bitter end.
Jesus made a prophetic promise to assume the negative effects of sin, so we would not need to. He did this all while remaining pure and sinless. He never sinned. Jesus demonstrated the principles of empathy, forgiveness, and physical healing when He forgave and healed the man whose story is recorded in Mark 2. The only reason any of us can be healed or saved from eternal ruin is because Jesus volunteered to take the punishment we deserved so we can live the rewarding life that Jesus deserves. Give thanks. Amen.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
