This is devotional thought number 20 in our devotional series, “The Gospel According to Psalms.”
“To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The Lord hear thee in the day of trouble; The name of the God of Jacob defend thee; Send thee help from the sanctuary, And strengthen thee out of Zion; Remember all thy offerings, And accept thy burnt sacrifice; Selah. Grant thee according to thine own heart, And fulfil all thy counsel. We will rejoice in thy salvation, And in the name of our God we will set up our banners: The Lord fulfil all thy petitions. Now know I that the Lord saveth his anointed; He will hear him from his holy heaven With the saving strength of his right hand. Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: But we will remember the name of the Lord our God. They are brought down and fallen: But we are risen, and stand upright. Save, Lord: Let the king hear us when we call.” (Psalm 20).
If you read through the book of Revelation, which in a lot of ways is a composite of prophetic history, the gospel of Jesus Christ with a last days emphasis, and a glorious climax of Christ’s victory over sin on our behalf, you may get the celebratory tone of our theme text for today. Likewise, if you read through God’s people, Israel’s history, and recount the many victories He won on their behalf, you can almost hear the shouts of praise for His goodness. You can almost hear the cries for joy because He has overcome all of the devil’s attacks, every temptation, every trial, and given us eternity without the possibility of sin. You can almost hear the crowds cheering and giving thanks, “For He hath triumphed gloriously!” Can you see yourself in the crowd? Can you feel the praise welling up in your chest ready to burst forth as one who has been waiting so long to be free that you can hardly believe that the time has come?
Today, I need you to invest a few minutes and ask God to awaken a desire within you to make it until the end of this life’s journey. Envision the day when all of this will be over, and that Jesus will come to you and place His crown of life upon your head. But, I need you to envision yourself, not as the weary soldier you are today. No! Envision yourself more beautiful than you have ever been. See yourself with perfect memory, a wonderful singing voice, supernatural intelligence, and energy that never wanes. Please, whatever you do, do not envision these things with you alone. See the many persons you have helped, through the Holy Spirit, to be victorious with you. See their smile and hear their laughter as they consider how wonderful God is for giving them the precious gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ, our Lord!
This has been the gospel according to Psalms. Live by it!—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
