This is devotional thought number 21 in our devotional series, “The Gospel According to Psalms.”

“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: My God; in him will I trust.” (Psalm 91:1–2).

I can remember a day in 1996 (almost) like it was yesterday. I was working two jobs. One of them was security in an upscale hi-rise where only business persons, independently wealthy, and professional athletes lived. One of my fellow security officers was a Christian just like I am (then, I was a new believer). We were discussing the tribulation that will hit the earth right before Jesus returns; whether God was powerful enough to keep His people through that time of trouble, or if He needed to secretly whisk us away before it hit. Of course, I believe God is able to keep us through any tribulation just like He did the children of Israel through the plagues that hit Egypt.

While we were talking about this, a miracle of understanding happened. I just told you I was a new believer. I did not tell you how new. I had only been attending church for several months, and had not too many verses of Scripture memorized. But as we discussed this, the Lord took me back to the late 1970s when I was in grade school and required to memorize Psalm 91. Mind you, I barely even read the Bible between that time and 1995. As I advocated God’s power to keep us, I began to expound the 91st chapter on the Psalms, which I had not read three times over the past almost 20 years! I was encouraged by the fact that those who “dwell,” not pass through, but dwell in a loving relationship with God like it’s a temple, will continue under the shadow of the Almighty (Blessed be His Name). Something or someone can only cast a shadow on us if we are close by them. Are you remaining near to God? Are you dwelling in Him? If so, you are safe through every trial. If He is your Refuge and trust, you are safe through every tribulation. If He is your Shield and Protector, the devil can only irritate you, but never destroy you.

Be encouraged! There is no trial or temptation that escapes God’s notice. If you place all your fears, doubts, and complaints into His care, you will be safe until Jesus returns.

This has been the gospel according to Psalms. Live by it!—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
