This is devotional thought number 23 in our devotional series, “The Gospel According to Psalms.”

“For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.” (Psalms 91:11-12).

God’s holy angels are always watching over His people. In the same way Jesus could have called 12 legions of angels to His aid when He was here saving us from sin, He would rather dispatch all of heaven’s angels to the side of one repentant sinner whom the devil tries to force to obey him.

The devil got it twisted! In the wilderness of temptation where he and Jesus had a showdown, he twisted today’s theme passage to mean that we could live recklessly, disregard God’s Word, do what the devil commands, and expect holy angels to bail us out. The devil got it twisted. He used the same tactics in the wilderness that he taught Balaam to pass on to Balak when the curse didn’t work. Balaam could not curse God’s people for profit, so he devised a plan for them to curse themselves through disobedience. He enticed them into fornication, to position them on the wrong side of God’s will, so the consequences for sin would result.

Holy angels do come to our aid, even when we are stubborn and disobedient, but that is only by the mercy of God. Unfortunately, the consequences for our stubbornness are still to follow. Yes, God often shows kindness when we are stubborn, but the effects of our sins are guaranteed. We can confess and forsake our sins, and experience cleansing and forgiveness for eternal impact, but in the meantime, we do bare much of the earthly pain of our actions.

Our theme text shows us how much God is willing to do to help us avoid all of the pain and negative consequences I have described, and more. It gives us the picture of a loving God who, yes, does pick us up when we fall, but has given His angels the responsibility to keep willing people from falling in the first place. They are there to “keep us in all our ways, so we need not stumble.” The devil cannot force anyone to fall, anymore than he was able to force Jesus in the wilderness. Holy angels are watching over us, and will bear us up into divine care when we surrender ourselves wholeheartedly to the God who sent them.

This has been the gospel according to Psalms. Live by it!—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
