This is devotional thought number 24 in our devotional series, “The Gospel According to Psalms.”

“Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, And shew him my salvation.” (Psalm 91:14–16).

What’s in a name? There is so much riding on someone’s good name. Brands are built upon names. Legacies continue upon family names. Our children represent us for good or for ill while carrying our name into the community. Our spouses align families through names. We must be careful whose name we align ourselves with.

God’s name is powerful! If I have two hours to present on this topic, it would not be sufficient to capture my zeal for the name of God. He manifests Himself in a new and exciting way to Moses when He said, ““I am Yahweh—‘the Lord.’ I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as El-Shaddai—‘God Almighty’—but I did not reveal my name, Yahweh, to them.” (Exodus 6:2–3, NLT). He was moving the needle of love and familiarity so His people could see just how committed He was to their care. He manifested His proximity to their plight when they were in trouble. He did not stay way up in heaven as the powerful Creator who can command, from a distance, and things happen. No! He was so close to them that He could hear their groanings, and intimately sense their deepest needs; and then He supplied them. To them, He revealed the nearness of His presence as Yahweh (Blessed be His Name).

This reality was no more evident than in the days of Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. As they were threatened with certain death for disregarding a King’s narcissistic need for them to fall down and worship Him, those in the Babylonian kingdom were unfamiliar with the good name of the God who created the heavens and the earth, but to say He introduced Himself to them would be the understatement of the century. Jesus came near and turned the fiery death chamber into an air-conditioned worship center where every chain would be broken for those who loved Him. He introduced Himself when lying magicians and foolish court jesters sought to deceive the king, and God revealed the secret of the king’s heart and thousands of years of earth’s history in just one revelation. He showed Himself when He needed to humble the proud king for seven years to perfect his character. God is good like that!

God is still revealing His excellent name in the lives of those who love Him. For us, His answers to prayer are always given, in due time. To us, He sends protection in days of turmoil and strife. To us, He sends His longevity for long life and the blessing of eternal salvation. To us, He sends deliverance as we await the coming of King Emmanuel, whose name means, “God with us.” What’s in a name? When it’s God’s good name, everything!

This has been the gospel according to Psalms. Live by it!—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
