This is devotional thought number 53 in our devotional series, God’s Promises are Sure!

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” (Psalm 23:4).

I am impressed by David’s faith in God, but I realize this faith does not come without great investment of mind, body, and the fulness of one’s humanity (all that makes us who we are). He was fully invested. God had proven faithful over and over again. Are you fully invested? Have you seen the hand of God at work in your life? If so, give thanks and tell somebody about it. It may change their life forever.

Now David gets to a place in his song where he extols God’s power. He said that even when death, darkness, or unutterable woe seem to be approaching, he would fear no evil. That’s easy to say, but not so easy to live. Notice his reasoning. How could he profess with boldness, that he would not fear darkness? God was with him. Is God with you? Do you practice the visible presence of God? This is my way of asking if you recognize that God is with you, to the extent that you behave like you can see Him? Oftentimes we do things in secret that we would be ashamed of in public; forgetting that God sees all we do in secret. He is always there. He never sleeps or slumbers. He’s keeping a faithful record of all we do, say, intend, desire, and think. Since that’s the case, why not behave in such a way that shows deference to the King? Why not live with the awareness that He is present? We can talk to Him. We can sing to and about Him. We can introduce others to Him. How do you behave when someone you love is with you? You can cry and rejoice with Him. He is real. He is divinely near to those who love Him.

Since David knew His God was near, he did not need to fear. The imagery is wonderful. He found comfort in what he called God’s rod and staff. In the mindset, the rod was used for protection against assailants and dangerous animals. The shepherds always kept their rods of protection close at hand. Do you have confidence in God’s protection; that He knows exactly how to keep you in all situations? The staff was used as support when men and women needed a bit of extra help while walking. Traversing vast pasturelands, hills, valleys, etc., made it necessary for wise shepherds to keep a staff close at hand. Do you bless God for supporting you through thick and thin? Do you realize He will never allow any of His dependant, submissive children to stumble and fall? If we do, it’s because we neglect to trust Him.

The only reason David could have such confidence in his God, was because God had already promised that we should fear not, for He would be with all who trust in Him. He saw how God had triumphed over Israel’s enemies time and time again. He knew that the same God who had kept His word before would do it again. He will do it for you! You have no need to fear. Submit your all to God. Allow Him to perfect His love within you, and accept His precious promises. The mouth of the Lord has spoken.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
