This is devotional thought number 54 in our devotional series, God’s Promises are Sure!
“Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.” (Psalm 23:5).
As if our focus chapter could not get any better, David takes us to the next level! If you are a child of God, you certainly will have enemies. Those who hate Him will hate you. It’s the way it is. The devil will asail you, because he cannot get his filthy hands on God. It’s the way it is. David had a keen awareness of this reality, which in many ways fueled his zeal for God. He realized that the only way he would overcome the overwhelming odds, would be to give God 100% commitment. Although David made a few mistakes that the Scriptures have recorded, they also record that he was a man in pursuit of the heart of God. He reflected the brightness and beauty of the heart of God. He became a standard for righteous kings. David followed hard after His God. Do we the same?
Get the imagery here: you are being actively hunted by your enemies. They would love nothing more that to kill you. If you prefer, imagine something more insidious and less graphic. You have coworkers who lie on you, so-called friends who gossip your business, family members who are jealous of you, and church pew mates who despise you. Now imagine that as all your enemies approach, to inflict as much harm as possible upon your life, reputation, and emotional health, God swoops in to provide an extravagant meal with fine china, crystal goblets, sterling silverware, and luxury dinner service. Your enemies approach, but God has angels who excel in strength that keep them at bay until dinner service is over. How do you feel? Do you realize that God is always ready to bring luxury dinner service to your life while the enemy assails you? Research carefully the prodigal son portion of the parable of lost things. Did God prepare a feast for him? Study the imagery of Jesus standing at the door of our lives and knocking in Revelation 3. Did He bring dinner? Do not settle for a surface reading of the text. Put it to prayer and research. You will be amazed. Meditate upon the encouragement of Isaiah 55. Does God provide a feast? How much does it cost us? Our theme text is saying that God provides a calming presentation of His provision and acceptance of those who trust Him while the enemy tries to destroy them.
Notice the language David uses as he continues. He extols the Lord for giving him the blessing of the Holy Spirit. Every king, prophet, and priest during his time knew the significance of the anointing. They well knew they could not serve God or the people without the power of the Spirit filling them to overflowing. The work was too sacred, and would have been impossible to accomplish without Him.
God promises to bring luxury dinner service to each and every person who trusts Him (remember to look up the allusions to this I made earlier). He stands ready to drench us in the power of the Holy Spirit. The mouth of the Lord has spoken.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
