This is devotional thought number 62 in our devotional series, God’s Promises are Sure!

“He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.” (Revelation 3:5).

Could it be, that the reason Protestantism in America has been pronounced dead this year before the church has reformed, is that when the stalwarts of the Reformation got us on the right path, we failed to continue along that path? When a people receive a special message from God to return to the study of His Word in its purity, and fail to continue what they started, spiritual lethargy sets in. The truths that the early reformers gave their lives to defend began being cast aside and replaced with easy creeds and weak statements of a stagnant faith, the people of God dishonored the light He sent through His suffering servants, to return to Bible truth and continue to grow in it. Yet, all was not lost during the era of the church in Sardis. As in most cases, God preserved a faithful few, who held up the banner of righteousness; and to them, and all others actuated by the same Spirit who actuated them, God made great and precious promises.

How do you react in situations where you are given the opportunity to stand for Christ? When you are presented with an opportunity to testify of His goodness in your life, what do you do? When you are presented with the opportunity to share the truth even when it’s not popular, what do you do? When the Holy Spirit shows you that you need to turn away from your sinful thoughts and actions, while He gives you godly sorrow for sin, how do you respond? If you respond favorably to His entreaties, overcoming your human fears and frailties, God says that He will give you the righteousness of Christ, which gives you the right to have your name written in the book of life. While others are becoming complacent, we can be redoubling our efforts, in the Spirit, to surrender our will to God and cling to His truth at all costs. The mouth of the Lord has spoken.—L.
