Thoughts in Worship
Message Magazine's Online Devotional for Friday, January 29, 2016
This Week’s Devotional Focus is, “Freedom From Sin.”
“For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:5–11).
Texts like this are not very helpful if I cannot use them everyday. When we receive Jesus into our lives and accept everything He has done for us as the only means of salvation, we are included in the text above. Jesus being raised from the dead is my assurance that I can be forgiven for all of the sins I have ever committed (Romans 3:22-26). Do you remember the woman caught in the very act of adultery in John chapter eight? The Bible says that when Jesus forgave her, He empowered her to be free from sin. When Jesus forgives us, He also gives us the power to resist sin (I Corinthians 10:13; James 4:7-10). It is similar to when Jesus forgave and healed a paralyzed man in Mark chapter two. Jesus forgave Him, and with a command full of love and power said, "Get up, take your mat and go home." He too could “go and sin no more.”
When you are at work or school, and someone wants you to do something ungodly, you can talk to God about it and He will empower you to do the right thing. You don't have be motivated by the world’s paradigm or squeezed into its mold anymore, because Jesus has delivered you. Anything that is against what God says in the Bible is sin. With God’s power at work in your life you can walk away from illegal drug use. You no longer need to be involved in sex with anyone before you get married because you are free from sin. Drinking beer, and other alcoholic beverages does not entice you anymore, because your motivation now is to love God and have eternal life.
When you accept Jesus and His victory over sin, you have a new outlook on life. You have new friends who help you grow in Jesus, instead of away from Him (Mark 10:26-31). We can now understand that we don't have to sin, but if we do, because we are still weak, Jesus will help (I John 2:1). Jesus being raised from the dead as our theme text says is greatest reason you can live a godly life here on earth, and then one day live with God eternally.—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
