This is devotional thought number 66 in our devotional series, God’s Promises are Sure!
“He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.” (Revelation 21:7).
The time will have come! Finally, we will have reached a point when the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, for which we now await eagerly, is in our rearview. Finally, we will have experienced a thousand years of peace while vacationing in heaven. We will have seen and walked on streets of gold. We will have conversed with holy angels, been seated upon thrones with Christ, and eaten from the Tree of Life. We will have finally come to the point of our inheritance. Jesus said in the Beatitudes, just like He did in our theme text, “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5). This means that overcomers are meek. He said, “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” (Matthew 5:9). This means that the children of God, who are overcomers live in a peaceful relationship with God. They bear the peaceable fruits of righteousness. Inasmuch as it is up to them, they are at peace with everyone.
God has a great memory! Thousands of years ago, He made a promise to Abraham. He said, “And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.” (Genesis 17:7–8). So God, in this covenant gave us a foretaste of things to come. The second generation of slaves freed from Egyptian bondage, along with Joshua and Caleb walked into their earthly inheritance. Praise the Lord! He is the ultimate Promise Keeper. Amen. But, He was not done keeping promises yet. This covenant transcended the old earth. It transcended Abraham’s natural seed. This covenant was a promise to those who would keep the faith that Abraham also had in his God. In fact, Paul said it this way: “For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” (Galatians 3:27–29). Let’s bring this full circle now. To those who continually accept God’s power to overcome sin in our lives, will be meek; will be peacemakers; will be called the children of God, and will ultimately inherit the prize God promised Abraham. They will inherit the all things new. All that God has prepared, which eye has not yet seen, nor ear has yet heard, shall be given to overcomers a thousand years after the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.
Jesus is coming sooner than most of us realize. When He does come, He will give us new bodies that match our purified characters. He will give us an extended vacation while He puts the finishing touches on the “all things” that will become new. In the meantime, during this promise-keeping fest, we will enjoy the fruits of the tree whose leaves are for the healing of the nations. We will bask in the sun of immortal life at last.
