This is devotional thought number 67 in our devotional series, God’s Promises are Sure!

“But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” (Matthew 26:29).

If you are thirsty, get a drink of water. If you are thirsty for eternal life, drink in of all Jesus has to offer and receive the satisfaction only relationship with Him can give.

As Jesus prepared to give His life for us, He celebrated Passover with a meal at one of His disciple’s home. He made arrangements and delegated duties, and at the appropriate time, Jesus and His disciples sat down to eat. You may recall that within their culture, eating together was a symbol of fellowship and peace between the parties enjoying their meal together. And thus it was that Jesus was establishing fellowship with those who were born in sin. He taught love, humility, and patience, as they learned what it meant to be unified with God and one another.

As Jesus shared the keys of the kingdom with His disciples, He also shared a fresh view of the New Covenant. As they searched their hearts, startled by the fact that someone from among their ranks was about to betray Him, He gave the ultimate lesson in humility. The meek and lowly Savior allowed the plot of His betrayer to be carried through to the bitter end, but not without first making a promise. As He passed around the bread, which represented a lively relationship with Him, and the wine, which represented the New Covenant in His blood that would be shed for us, He said He would not drink of the fruit of the vine again until He did so with them in the kingdom. Jesus promised to drink again with them in the kingdom; therefore, He was promising that some would make it into the kingdom. Why would He plan to do something with people in the kingdom if they would not be there? It just wouldn’t make sense.

When Jesus raises His cup of fresh, heavenly grape juice in the kingdom, and proposes a toast in honor of those who surrendered their all to Him until the end, will you be in that number? Will you experience the fulfillment of the promise that He would have a refreshing drink with those He prepared for the kingdom? By making this promise to wait to drink grape juice again until He comes into the fullness of His kingdom of glory, He is promising to save people into said kingdom. You can be an overcomer, if you trust Jesus with all that you are and all that you have. And one day soon, enjoy a covenant drink with the King. The mouth of the Lord has spoken.—L.
