This is devotional thought number 5 in our devotional series titled, “Wisdom for the Ages.”
“For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding. He stores up effective counsel for the upright, and is like a shield for those who live with integrity, to guard the paths of the righteous and to protect the way of his pious ones.” (Proverbs 2:6–8, NET).
The only way we can have lasting wisdom that leads to life is if we get it from the Source, God Himself. Worldly wisdom may help in the procurement of riches. Worldly wisdom will help with engendering pride and self congratulations. It may help us do things that will never transcend this life, but the kind of wisdom that makes us proficient contributors in this life and candidates for the life to come comes only from God. The Bible says, “But if anyone is deficient in wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without reprimand, and it will be given to him. But he must ask in faith without doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed around by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord, since he is a double-minded individual, unstable in all his ways.” (James 1:5–8, NET).
One of the things I love about the imagery in our theme passage is how God is warehousing illimitable stores of counsel for people who live in surrender to Him. He’s waiting with bated breath to throw open the doors and release His blessings upon those who trust Him. He will shield, guard, and protect His children. His children rely on Him for lasting wisdom and turn our backs on the foolishness of this world. “Guard against self-deception, each of you. If someone among you thinks he is wise in this age, let him become foolish so that he can become wise. For the wisdom of this age is foolishness with God. As it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness.”And again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.”So then, no more boasting about mere mortals! For everything belongs to you,” (1 Corinthians 3:18–21, NET).
A word to the foolish is wasteful. A word to the wise is sufficient.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
