Message Magazine's Online Devotional for Thursday, February 11, 2016
This Week’s Devotional Focus is, “The Holy Spirit.”
“But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:” (John 15:26).
One of the most incredible truths about Jesus that most do not even realize is just how much He sacrificed in order to save us. He divested Himself of honor for 33 ½ years when He chose to be born into the human family. Although He is ever one with the Father, there were times He felt lonely and forsaken. He endured ridicule, undue punishment, and pain at the hands of those He came to save, which He also created. He allowed the enemy of souls to blasphemously buffet Him as he dogged every step Jesus made. The One who is the epitome of holiness was killed like a common criminal. Words fail me to describe all that Jesus sacrificed for us.
Mysteriously becoming human while remaining God (the Son), Jesus sacrificed omnipresence. That is, by virtue of Jesus adopting human form, which He has carried into heavenly places where He makes intercession for us, He has limited Himself to being in one place at one time. This is an incredible sacrifice for God. For Jesus to so align Himself with our plight that He would change His eternal form is nothing short of astounding.
This is where the beauty of heavenly cooperation comes in. The Holy Spirit, whose eternal form the Bible does not describe, is not limited to space. At all times, He is capable of being present with people, no matter where we are. Thus it is that a person in Aruba can be filled with the Holy Spirit while another person in Dubai can.
So when Jesus went back to heaven some time following His resurrection, His promise of another Comforter brought with it many blessings, not the least of which was to bring Jesus’ message and presence wherever the Spirit goes. Thus it is that when we pray in the name and spirit of Jesus, He can answer our prayers. This is how we can sense His presence when two or three are gathered together in His name. Among the countless cooperative functions of the Spirit of God is to reiterate all of the teachings of Jesus and infuse our minds with their import.
It is a blessing to have even a glimpse of divine cooperation on our behalf. The Spirit comes from the Father at the behest of the Son to guide us into the paths of righteousness. In all these things and more, we see that God will stop at nothing to save as many as are willing from our sins. There’s no place the voice of God is not heard as long as His eternal Spirit continues to strive with us.—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
