Message Magazine's Online Devotional for Friday, February 12, 2016
This Week’s Devotional Focus is, “The Holy Spirit.”
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” (2 Timothy 3:16–17).
One of the most precious, yet most often taken for granted gifts is our breath. I don’t know if you realize this or not, but our breath is on loan from God. Every time we inhale and then exhale, we should have an attitude of praise and thanksgiving. Have you ever been out of breath? Have you ever experienced an asthma attack or felt like you were going to drown as you gasped for air? Was it a desperate feeling? Without the God given gift of breath, we cannot continue to live. So if you are reading this devotional thought, you are still a recipient of the breath God gave humanity during the first week of creation. God formed Adam from the dust, breathed into his nostrils, and he began to live.
Interestingly, our theme text gives a similar picture regarding the gift of the Bible. It says that all Scripture was given by the inspiration of God (the Holy Spirit). The biblical word from which our English term “inspiration” comes literally means, “God-breathed.” When the holy men of God who penned the scriptures spake as they were moved upon by the Holy Ghost, they were experiencing His vivifying breath. It was the spiritual breath of life they inhaled as they were under God’s influence. (2 Peter 1:21).
Let’s put this all together. Being inspired by the Holy Spirit is like receiving the breath of life. Without Him, our spiritual lives would not exist. Without His breath, we would have no direction. Without His breath, we would have no way to be perfected unto good works. It is profitable to allow the Spirit of God to breathe upon us each day.
If you are feeling like you are having your spiritual life choked out of you, because of life’s circumstances and temptations, ask God to breath into your experience and be refreshed by His presence.—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
