This is devotional thought number 24 in our devotional series, “Stewarding the Heart.”

“Or if his sin, which he hath sinned, come to his knowledge: then he shall bring his offering, a kid of the goats, a female without blemish, for his sin which he hath sinned. And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the sin offering, and slay the sin offering in the place of the burnt offering.” (Leviticus 4:28, 29).

Close your eyes and imagine the day that they took Jesus, now betrayed and falsely accused, to the place where they would crucify Him. Badly beaten, bruised, and forsaken by His fellows, Jesus patiently cooperates with His enemies while they nail Him to splintered wood that formed the shape of a cross. You hear the mocking and insults, but are paralyzed. You see the faces contorted with the devilish glee of a predator soon to make sure of its prey. You can almost smell the stench of imminent death, and the fear of those who would join Him. The heartless, calloused soldiers erect the cross and thrust it violently into a hole made especially for that purpose. How do you feel? What part do you play in the scenes that pass before you?

As I read some of the requirements of the ancient earthly system of sacrifices, these images became vivid to me. I considered the fact that the sins which require a sacrifice are mine. I am the cause of Jesus’ death. Not only that, but the Bible says that those among the common people who sinned and the knowledge of that sin came to them, had to bring a sacrifice. They had to bring a female kid of goats without blemish or spot. As they entered the place where the sacrifice was to be made, you would think that it was transferred to the priest for an offering, but such was not the case. Each sinner had to bring their own sacrifice according to their economic situation, lay hands upon its head, and pray. This act was symbolic of transferring the confessed sin to the innocent lamb. After that, the sinner had to cut the throat of the innocent, yet cooperative victim. Then the priest took over and began to apply the blood and make sacrifice according to the law.

Can you imagine laying hands on the Son of God, confessing your sins, and lowering the knife to cut His throat? When we sin, it is no small matter. It required the life of the only spotless Son of God. I wonder how prone I would be to deliberately transgress God’s law if I was compelled to envision myself taking the life of Christ with my own bare hands. It is a sobering thought.

Praise the Lord for His willingness to bear our sins to the cross and give us the opportunity to be saved.

Welcome to the privilege of becoming faithful stewards of your hearts. Manage responsibly, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
