This is devotional thought number 27 in our devotional series, “Stewarding the Heart.”
“If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.” (Isaiah 58:13, 14)
In the days of Isaiah the prophet, God’s people Israel were in a poor condition. They needed the Lord to bring what He deemed as necessary, to the forefront of their minds. In some ways, they understood proper outward behaviors, like fasting for example, but the practical godliness that springs from within was lost. Because of their lack of commitment to God, they could not understand His will. This is why God often sent special messages. If they had been diligent in seeking the Lord for themselves, they would not have needed such pointed messages to come through the prophets. It is a blessing to know, that whatever the needed spiritual supplementation is, God is willing to give it.
Fasting, an outward sign of piety was respected highly by God’s people. Often they associated it with holiness, regardless of their inner spiritual state. They wore fasting like a badge of honor. God was not satisfied with most of their fasts. He desired a higher level of personal commitment to match their outward piety. “Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward.” Isaiah 58:6-8. Great promises were associated with truehearted, godly commitment.
God revealed to them that along with relieving the suffering of others and bringing them the light of salvation, they were to return to true worship through Sabbath commitment. They were to return to God’s intended use of His holy time. They were to reserve the seventh-day as God’s special day to commune with them on a level higher than on any other day. In this way, they would delight themselves in the Lord. In this way, He would cause them to ride upon the high places of the earth. Great promises were associated with the right and godly observance of the seventh-day Sabbath.
If we seek to be called by God’s name in the last days, His admonitions to the ancient children of Israel are to be heeded (Galatians 3:29). When we return to practical godliness by relieving suffering, and remembering His holy time, we stand only to benefit. We are aligning ourselves with the King of the universe, and He is pleased. Do not sell yourself short on God’s blessings. Return to practical godliness and watch the Lord work in new ways in your life.
