This is devotional thought number 28 in our devotional series, “Stewarding the Heart.”
“And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.” (1 Samuel 3:10)
As Hannah promised if God would make her womb fruitful, the young miracle child Samuel ministered to Him (1 Samuel 1:11). He demonstrated attentiveness and a willingness to be faithful in serving God. Soon he would be introduced to a higher level of ministry. God would reveal Himself in a way that the child was not yet acquainted. God was about to speak.
As Samuel and his lord Eli were sleeping one night, Samuel heard a voice call out to him. He awoke and quickly went to Eli as any dedicated boy would. Eli told him that he should go back to sleep, because he did not call him. Samuel did as he was told and soon he heard the voice again. Samuel quickly went to Eli again, and once more Eli told him to go back to sleep because He did not call. Of course, Samuel did as he was told. Again, Samuel heard the voice. It was unmistakable. The voice said, “Samuel.” Quickly Samuel went to Eli insisting that he called, and Eli knew that it was the Lord. “Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.” (1 Samuel 3:9, 10). “And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision.” (1 Samuel 3:1).
Have you ever mistaken the voice of God? When unexpected situations have occurred in your life and the Lord was speaking through them, did you recognize His voice? As the Lord spoke to Samuel in the night, He speaks to us through the darkness of trials. As Samuel was bewildered going to his lord Eli, thinking it was he who called, sometimes we misinterpret our own life events, and become bewildered by our misapprehension of them. The blessing is that God persists. He gives us the Holy Spirit to make clear when it is God speaking to us. When we have that awareness, we like Samuel, can be still in the darkness and listen to the voice of God and say, “Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth.”
Welcome to the privilege of becoming faithful stewards of your hearts. Manage responsibly, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
