Message Magazine's Online Devotional for Thursday, February 25, 2016
This Week’s Devotional Focus is, “Encouraging Psalms.”
“Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, That I might not sin against thee.” (Psalm 119:9–11).
At some point or another, if we hope to live with God forever, we have to face our(true)selves in the mirror. And if we have God’s Word as our guide, we will immediately recognize spots, wrinkles, sores, and blemishes. We will realize our makeup is all blotchy where we attempted to cover up some parts and other parts were half washed off. We are not as camera-ready as we had once believed. Our characters are not comprised of our perceptions of self or our reputations, which are both largely based upon bad information. The content of our characters are based upon either cooperating with or working against God in our lives.
The psalmist provides excellent counsel to all of us regardless of age or circumstance as he seeks to encourage young people. He says that if we are ever to have a prayer of keeping our ways pure, we must obey God’s Word, seeking Him diligently, yearning for Him, and reaching out for all God has to offer with our entire hearts. But do realize he immediately mingles a prayer of humble submission with this counsel. He asks the Lord to not to allow him to step any at all to the left or right; whether ignorantly or on purpose, from His commandments. He highlights the fact that we are prone to wander. We are prone to leave the Lord we claim to love the moment the next fascinating temptation comes our way. He both recognizes and models the reality of our need to receive divine aid. We cannot obey God’s Word or follow Him with our whole hearts without His Spirit. He continues by saying that he has made it a point to hide, preserve, and cherish God’s Word in his heart as inoculation against the deadly virus of sin.
Do you want a pure heart that satisfies God in every way? Take heed to God’s Word. Pursue God with every fiber of your being. Consistently seek Him for divine aid. Make your life a comfortable place for the eternal Word of God to find abode. Then, and only then will you have the peace and holiness Jesus purchased with His blessed sacrifice.—L.
