This is devotional thought number 21 in our devotional series titled, “Wisdom for the Ages.”

“Envy thou not the oppressor, And choose none of his ways.” (Proverbs 3:31)

So many of our inner city youth would benefit from today’s counsel. It would dismantle the desire of those interested in being gangsters, pimps, drug hustlers, and money launderers. So many of our aspiring artists would benefit from today’s counsel. It would dismantle the fear of being required to perform sex acts to get ahead. So many of our politicians and world leaders would benefit from today’s counsel. It would dismantle the desire to subjugate people groups, opposing governments, and using political power for financial gain. So many of our pastors and religious leaders would benefit from today’s counsel. It would dismantle incessant sowing and reaping type preaching that is only designed to get the masses to increase greedy preacher’s personal coffers. So many business people would benefit from today’s counsel. It would dismantle the ideology that tramples anyone who gets in the way of profits. It would dismantle sweatshops, forced labor, unfair wages, poor quality production standards, overpaying underworked executives, and other unscrupulous practices.

So many of us, in our everyday lives would benefit from today’s counsel. It gives us confidence that God is pleased when we simply surrender ourselves to Him, find contentement even while we aspire to greatness, and value integrity above personal gain. As a reminder, let me share today’s theme text from the Amplified Bible: “Do not resentfully envy and be jealous of an unscrupulous, grasping man, and choose none of his ways.” (Proverbs 3:31, AMP).

A word to the foolish is wasteful. A word to the wise is sufficient.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
