This is devotional thought number 30 in our devotional series, “Stewarding the Heart.”

“Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him. Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.” (Leviticus 19:17, 18)

I often think of a lofty relationship principle that can easily escape our attention. Imagine that you are in a room all alone with blank walls and no outside influences. You do not say a word. In fact, you have your eyes closed. As you sit and think, you ponder wicked things. In your own mind, you commit sin. When you open your eyes, you leave the room and never mention or act out the sin you conceived in your mind. Does this have an effect on those around you? Are others affected by your secret cognitive sin? It is an interesting thought.

Whenever we separate ourselves from the Lord through sin, we have an impact on all with whom we come into contact. In fact, if we are unrepentant, there may be people that could have been won for Christ that may not because we could not detect Him leading us to them for witnessing. All who do experience the atmosphere could be eternally influenced for good, but our witness is impaired. If I am to love my neighbor as the Lord commanded, I must first live in a love relationship with Him, knowing that a strong relationship with Him, equips us to do so. In that case, He is alive in us, empowering us to enfold others in our love. No human being is an island. All of our actions and inactions have an impact on the people around us.

The verses above and those preceding them teach an overwhelming lesson on relationships. They teach us not to lie. They teach us to provide for and respect the poor, and freely forgive others. All of these relationship principles are attainable only as we love the Lord. This is the lesson for today: “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” (Matthew 22:37-40).

Welcome to the privilege of becoming faithful stewards of your hearts. Manage responsibly, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
