Thoughts in Worship

“Every word of God is pure: He is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.” (Proverbs 30:5).
Sticks and stones may break your bones, but words… really hurt!
I totally get why our forbearers tried to encourage us not to take people’s words too seriously, but they are much stronger than these well-meaning folks let on. Here’s what the Bible says: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: And they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” (Proverbs 18:21). Further, it states: “In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.” (James 3:5–6, NLT). It’s no wonder, then, Jesus said: “A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.” (Matthew 12:35–37).
It stands to reason, then, that we need to give our words an overhaul. “...For of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.” (Luke 6:45). Whatever we allow our minds to dwell upon will eventually overflow from our mouths. Upon what do you dwell? May I suggest you center your thoughts upon the tested and tried Words of God? May I propose that you place your trust in Him? God protects the minds of those who trust Him.
While others are second-guessing the Words of God, make them your meditation both day and night. Choose to elevate your thoughts so your words can be aligned with His and become a balm of healing to all who hear you. Let your words count for something—life, health, and peace.—L.
