This is devotional thought number 33 in our devotional series, “Stewarding the Heart.”
“Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the LORD filled the house. And the priests could not enter into the house of the LORD, because the glory of the LORD had filled the LORD's house. And when all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down, and the glory of the LORD upon the house, they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the pavement, and worshipped, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.” (II Chronicles 7:1-3).
The temple of the Lord and the Ark of the Covenant were viewed as symbols of God’s favor. The children of Israel felt secure when the ark was safe and the temple remained. Through consistent disobedience, there were several instances when these symbols were not present and God allowed their enemies to seemingly triumph over them. Certainly, the Lord used their enemies to bring them into conformity to His will.
During one of the times in which the temple lay in ruins, King David besought the Lord to allow him to rebuild it. God told him that is was well that it was within his heart to do such a great thing, but his hands were filled with too much blood. He promised that his own son Solomon would do it and God would be glorified. The time finally came. The temple was fully built and its magnificence was seen by all. It stood as a monument of the favor of God returning to His people Israel. The priests were arrayed in all of their pomp and majesty, the sacrifices were thoughtfully prepared, and the people of God awaited the glory of God as they all experienced the dedication of God’s house. Solomon prayed one of the most beautiful prayers recorded in the Bible. He recounted the incredible mercy of God, His love for Israel, and His awe-inspiring essence. Suddenly the Lord showed His acceptance of their worship with the signal fire from heaven that Elijah experienced on Mount Carmel. The glory of God so filled the temple that the priests could not even enter. It was surely the best day Israel had experienced, therefore they bowed themselves to the ground and continued to worship. All were pleased that the Lord saw fit to honor humankind with His presence.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we put as much energy into inviting the Lord into our soul temples? For many years, the people of God longed to experience His presence in that special way. The king plead with God to allow him the honor of having a role to play in building this memorial to God. No expense was spared; no cost was too much for their Lord. I want the zeal of those who waited on the Lord in that day. I want to long to have Him occupy me, setting my soul ablaze with His spirit. I want to be able to say with all of those present at His grand display, the Lord is truly in His holy temple, my soul temple. This is where He most delights to dwell.
Welcome to the privilege of becoming faithful stewards of your hearts. Manage responsibly, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
