“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12).

Can you handle the truth? God can.

When we stand before the Word of the Living God, we are naked and vulnerable as can be. Like a sharp sword can separate the joints from marrow, God’s Word separates our holy thoughts from unholy ones. The question is: “when the Word does this, will you continue to appear before its searching eye or run away to hide under cover of darkness?”

There’s an old song titled, The Freaks Come Out at Night, and its author underscores the idea that the strangely dressed, overtly promiscuous people that one may encounter in the Discotech don’t reveal their true selves until deep into the night. They may be the same people around whom we work, shop, commute, etc., but until nightfall, we most likely are unable to discern the reality that they are, well, “freaks.”

The songwriter aptly demonstrates that human beings are more comfortable unleashing their most deviant behaviors under cover of darkness. It provides a level of boldness and false sense of security. When the day dawns, or the lights come on, a strange hush comes over the spell of emboldened sin. The Bible says many of us shy away from the light because our deeds are evil.

Truth is, God sees all of our secrets as though its non time, all the time. His Word calls both sin and righteousness by their right names. When the light of God shines into your life, can you handle the truth? Can you handle that you (and I) have cultivated many shameful tendencies toward evil? Can you handle that even if you try to do wickedness in secret, God will manifest it to your conscience in all its gory details for you to surrender, confess, and forsake? The great thing about God is that, while He sees everything we do and are in truth, He can handle it. There is nothing too hard for Him when we submit to Him.

Since God already sees and knows all why not do yourself a favor and just be honest with Him? Do not try to hide yourself from Him. Let His Word, which revealed your sinfulness, not shine the light on your path toward righteousness. Let God’s truth, through the power of the Holy Spirit, provide the powerful guidance you need to serve Him, both day and night, without reservation.—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
