This is devotional thought number 26 in our devotional series titled, “Wisdom for the Ages.”

“My child, be attentive to my wisdom, pay close attention to my understanding, in order to safeguard discretion, and that your lips may guard knowledge. For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey, and her seductive words are smoother than olive oil, but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave.” (Proverbs 5:1–5, NET).

Is the Bible practical? I hope you said, “yes.” Far too often people miss the gems of truth in Scripture because they are not willing to see the simplicity, ask God to apply it, and learn what else He might have in store as they apply it faithfully.

Today’s Scripture is a perfect case in point. Solomon is teaching his son, through repetition, how to stay focused and protect himself spiritually. The counsel, however, cuts right through where most men live. It’s about avoiding the allurements of sexual indiscretion, and applying ourselves unto godly wisdom. Some of us put ourselves in precarious situations with women; one thing leads to another, and then we fall prey to our own lusts. At first, the calls, texts, and emails seem innocent enough when some men are confiding marital woes to a woman who seems so passionate and attentive. The compliments she gives and the empathy she seems to communicate feels validating. In men’s eyes who have begun down the slippery slope to perdition, her touch, voice, scent, company, compassion, etc., becomes irresistible. Why? The adulterous woman is irresistible to men who miss their first step of safety—paying close attention to wisdom and holding God’s knowledge in high esteem. Too many of us behave like we do not need God’s input, and before we know it, we have destroyed our families, ministries, health, and dignity. Nevermind, every man in history who has allowed himself to succumb to lust has been allured by the initial sweetness of the situation, and then have been cut by the two-edged sword of lust’s consequences. Lust and sexual discretion are always a road to destruction. The temporary thrill is not worth it. I’m pretty sure countless men, some of whom do not even know God, would say to run as far as possible from lust and alluring women who couldn't care less for your well being. Yes, we could speak of the more philosophical implications of the passage, but some of us need to see the living-color counsel here today. Do not be seduced by lust. Do not be a seducer either.

A word to the foolish is wasteful. A word to the wise is sufficient.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
