“We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” (2 Peter 1:19–21).

Can you imagine the day Jesus replicated aspects of the Second Coming for His friends, Peter, James, and John? What a glorious day that must have been, huh?

It probably started out as any other ordinary day, except for the fact that Jesus had been telling them He would be crucified soon. Then it happened: Jesus took the three men up into a mountain and His appearance was transformed right before their eyes. He went up appearing like an average man from His region, but He was transformed into the manifestation of the glorified coming King! It was amazing. The prophets, Moses and Elijah also came to the mountain at that moment, representing those who would see Jesus at His coming without tasting death, and those who would be resurrected at His appearing. They heard God the Father proclaim that Jesus was His beloved son who pleased Him well. Peter wanted to create a private feast of tabernacles, and as soon as he shared his idea, the scene returned to normal—no prophets, no heavenly voice, no dazzling brightness. Jesus told the disciples to keep this experience to themselves until after His resurrection.

Peter recounts this incredible experience in the verses preceding our theme text. Then, in a strange twist, he correlates the experience with Jesus on the mount with experiencing the Word of God. How often have you wished you could have experienced Jesus as He walked this earth? Peter says just like he experienced a symbol of Jesus’ coming, we now have a sure word of prophecy. The Word of God is not subject to our private interpretation, any more than Jesus’ effulgent appearance was subject to human intervention. The Word of God was given to us through the power of the Holy Spirit as He breathed His thoughts upon men who surrendered their lives to Him.

While it would have been great to have experienced Jesus’ ministry on earth all those years ago, I embrace the blessing He has given in the surety of His prophetic Word, which if I keep it, will transform my life forever. I embrace the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. I embrace the hope of Jesus’ soon return. Do you?—L. David Harris (www.DavidWritesaLot.com)
