This is devotional thought number 37 in our devotional series, “Stewarding the Heart.”

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” (Psalms 23:4).

Fear is an emotion that we all experience from time to time. A mother notices that her child is face down in the crib and she fears losing it to SIDS. A father listens to the news as he awaits his young son’s return from the battlefield of Iraq and hears that yet another group of soldiers has been killed. He fears that his son may not return home. A husband and wife have a turbulent argument and say things they wish they had not. In contemplation of the altercation, they fear an irreparable breach has been made in the relationship. Fear is normal, but human.

Did you know that God is able to give us such blessed assurance that we will fear no evil? David understood it well. Many of his enemies, whom he thought were friends, sought to take his life. Betrayal was something he had grown accustomed to. He existed under the constant shadow of death, yet he said that he feared no evil. Why? God was with him. He said that God’s rod and staff comforted Him. The rod of a good shepherd protected his sheep from predators and the staff guided them along the right path. God protects and leads us much in the same way.

We do not have to be gripped by fear. If we love the Lord, He controls every aspect of our lives. Nothing can happen to us that He has not first measured and allowed. There is no need to face life’s situations with trepidation. If we cannot add another moment to our lives, we do not gain anything by undue anxiety (Matthew 6:27-34).
Let us trust the Lord as did David, proclaiming that we fear no evil. There is nothing that comes our way that, in unison with God, we cannot handle. “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.” (Proverbs 3:5-8).

Welcome to the privilege of becoming faithful stewards of your hearts. Manage responsibly, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
