This is devotional thought number 38 in our devotional series, “Stewarding the Heart.”

“And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.” (Exodus 14:22).

What a spectacle of nature it must have been to see the Red Sea parted down the middle with a path of dry land for the Israelites to cross over. The idea of such a miracle is beyond comprehension. In spite of its inconceivability, it is true. God did use Moses to part the Red Sea down the middle, and dry land did appear. I suppose it makes sense on a higher spiritual level. The same God, who divided the waters from the dry land in the creation account, divided the waters so the Israelites could be led to freedom. Both cases separated the God of heaven from all false gods.

Would you have been able to trust God while walking that long seabed to freedom? Can you imagine the anxiety that might have overtaken you? Perhaps you would be perfectly cool, calm, and collected. I am not sure how I would have reacted. One thing is certain; the Lord had given His children sufficient evidence on which to hang their faith. The plagues that fell on Egypt that passed over the Israelites, while devastating the Egyptians, were definitely great evidence that God was with them. Certainly, there was still room for doubt; however there was also abundant evidence for implicit trust in God.

The children of Israel were being led step by step by the greatest, most compassionate and loving Being in the universe. Although they were the disloyal spouse in this spiritual relationship, God remained faithful. What a blessing it is to consider that even in their extreme circumstances, God was right there with them to lead, comfort, and cheer.

This portion of the story begins with a murmuring bunch of faithless people (Exodus 14:12), but ends with a congregation of thankful worshippers (Exodus 15:1-21). I realize that they reverted to their faithless ways soon afterward, but the reality still exists that the Israelites knew, without doubt, that they could trust God.

What impassible sea separates you from true freedom and worship? What tendencies cause you to flip-flop between praise and doubt? Learn a lesson from the Exodus. God will always be faithful to us, even in our extreme situations. In fact, it is in our seemingly impossible situations that He triumphs most gloriously. Let the Lord part your Red Sea of sinful habits, doubt, sadness, pain, or whatever you face. Surrender your faith to Him and know that you can trust the Lord.

Welcome to the privilege of becoming faithful stewards of your hearts. Manage responsibly, in Jesus’ name.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
