This is devotional thought number 31 in our devotional series titled, “Wisdom for the Ages.”
“A worthless and wicked person walks around saying perverse things; he winks with his eyes, signals with his feet, and points with his fingers; he plots evil with perverse thoughts in his heart, he spreads contention at all times. Therefore, his disaster will come suddenly; in an instant he will be broken, and there will be no remedy.” (Proverbs 6:12–15, NET).
We have seen them (hopefully not been them); people who have a habit of saying evil things, heaping insults upon insults, lying, and leading others astray. Some of these are so crafty in their speech and behavior it seems they have the devil’s help. In this age of technology, some folks with this tendency take to social media, and with two thumbs, type all sorts of misleading, inciting, and vulgar rubbish. Some post pictures, share videos, create live streaming rants, and hashtag their vitriol. Even people in positions of trust, and at a levels of society, are not immune to this epidemic. This virus is spreading, and wildly infecting the minds of unwary persons. Oh, how I wish it were not so, but it is.
I will admit to you, that before I studied deeply into the word meanings behind the translation of today’s text, I took issue with this concept of “worthless and wicked.” Worthless? The term “Belial” here denotes a good-for-nothing mentality. These children of belial are base and are not making valuable contributions to the society around them. They thumb their noses at God and all that is holy. Their speech is crooked. They lie. They twist truth to appear like a lie. Even their body language is deceiving, and can lead to others’ demise. Do a Bible search for the word, “Belial” and you’ll see what I mean.
The wise man is telling us that since such persons refuse God’s wisdom and instruction; since they love war and deception, and have devoted all to that end, they will receive the outcome of those who persistently resist God’s loving entreaties, stern correction, and open rebukes. The out come of such hatred for love, justice, and holiness can only be destruction. This need not be the case for any of you! If you are experiencing these devotional posts, it’s because God is drawing you into a deeper connection with Him. You can love, love. You can embrace wisdom and instruction. You can submit to God’s power to live above every human inclination toward evil. You can be saved. Today’s your day to be saved.
A word to the foolish is wasteful. A word to the wise is sufficient.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
