This is devotional thought number 33 in our devotional series titled, “Wisdom for the Ages.”
“My child, guard the commands of your father and do not forsake the instruction of your mother. Bind them on your heart continually; fasten them around your neck. When you walk about, they will guide you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; when you wake up, they will talk to you. For the commandments are like a lamp, instruction is like a light, and rebukes of discipline are like the road leading to life,” (Proverbs 6:20–23, NET).
If we pay attention, we will see that the truth of God’s Word is consistent. From the beginning of time, God has been teaching us the same valuable lessons, and due to the hardness of our hearts after Adam and Eve sinned, He has had to present the same truth from many perspectives. Like a beautiful diamond whose value we can appreciate as the light hits its many facets, so is the Word of truth, which can only be appreciated as the light of God’s Spirit shines in our minds as He applies the principles to our lives.
Let’s briefly break our passage down, to show how Scripture always agrees with itself. Solomon begins by telling his child to embrace the commands of his father and mother. Where have we heard that before? The commandment says that we are to honor our fathers and mothers so we can have long life. Solomon told his son to bind the commands on his heart continually. Where have we heard that before? God said He would make a New Covenant with His people, to write His laws in our hearts so we can know and love the Lord our God. Solomon told his son that the commands would guide him as he walked about, when he went to sleep, when he awoke, and that they would be like a lamp on the road leading to life. Where have we heard that before? Moses said, “These words I am commanding you today must be kept in mind, and you must teach them to your children and speak of them as you sit in your house, as you walk along the road, as you lie down, and as you get up. You should tie them as a reminder on your forearm and fasten them as symbols on your forehead. Inscribe them on the doorframes of your houses and gates.” (Deuteronomy 6:6–9, NET). Moreover, Solomon’s daddy said, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, And a light unto my path.” (Psalm 119:105). This beautiful gem of truth we call the Scriptures can only be appreciated as the light of God’s Spirit shines in our minds as He applies the principles to our lives.
I could show you many Scriptures with today’s theme, but suffice it to say, the same Holy Spirit who inspired one Bible writer, also inspired the others. The golden cord of truth transcended time, and the individual writers. Truth is eternal, consistent, and holy; and welcomes all who are humble enough to receive it, into the family of God. Truth warns those who hate love, that they can only disturb God’s order, to their own demise.
A word to the foolish is wasteful. A word to the wise is sufficient.—L. David Harris (www.LDavidHarris.com)
